The Epiphany Byzantine Catholic Church in Roswell, Georgia was torched at around 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning and suffered serious damages from four separate fires set around the outside of the building.
Police found Juan Ramirez, 24, naked in the 36 degree weather nearby and arrested him for disorderly conduct. Authorities have named him as a person of interest in the arson at the church.
When he was arrested Ramirez told police that he was Jesus Christ and that he was attempting to make contact with the old Indian gods.
“I don’t know about it being crazy. Let’s just put it this way, there’s something wrong,” said Father Phillip Scott, the priest at the church.
Father Scott who lives on the church property built the church himself by hand 34 years ago and has lived there ever since. He said that the church had insurance and that it would be rebuilt, until it is the Orthodox Church next door has offered the use of its building to the congregation.
Scott said that Ramirez and his girlfriend had attended services in his church but that no one had suspected that he had any mental problems.
“He and his girlfriend came to church. They came late,” Scott said.
In spite of the loss Father Scott remained optimistic. “We’re going to start construction on the repairs tomorrow morning so we’re getting right back into it. Hopefully have Christmas in there,” he told TV reporters.
