There are two people on the planet that are most capable of skewering hyperbolic nonsense spewed out regularly by the right-wing media machine — Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. In particular, this time of year provides Comedy Central’s dynamic duo of satirical wit in prime position to mock one of the right-wing’s most overused and overwrought talking points: The War on Christmas.
Colbert put his talents to work on last night’s edition of “The Colbert Report” in a segment he calls “Blitzkrieg on Grinchitude,” where he goes on the “offensive” with so-called Christmas haters.
Last night’s edition of his show featured a segment centered around a Christmas tree that took a bullet to save a family. During a drive-by shooting in the Pittsburgh area, a Christmas tree in a family’s window stopped a stray bullet. Colbert was on his game as he joked about the tree’s “inspiring act of courage.”
Pivoting, he then made a great commentary on gun control by advocating for the government to stop forbidding trees from owning guns, so that they can be more fairly equipped should they need to participate in a gun battle again in the future.
“Now inevitably a tree here or there will go crazy and turn its ornaments on the family, but that’s not the gun’s fault! What we need to do is make sure that trees get the mental health treatment that they desperately need.”
