High school senior Mark Betterson stepped in when he saw classmate Jonathan Colon being attacked by a bully in the lunchroom at East Lee County High School in Lehigh Acres, Florida last Thursday and found himself facing a ten day suspension and possible expulsion for his good deed.
Colon did not make any attempt to fight back, but Betterson jumped in to break the fight up, at which time Griffin turned on him. Unlike Colon, Betterson fought back and found himself in violation of the school’s “zero tolerance” policy on fighting, drawing an initial punishment of 10 days suspension.
While he did not think that the length of the suspension was fair considering the circumstances, Betterson had no regrets for his actions.
“It’s not fair for somebody to get beat up for something that he is,” he told local television station WFTX. “I’m not going to sit there and watch someone get bullied if I used to get bullied too.”
He also held no ill will toward the school authorities saying that he understands that they have rules and that they must be upheld.
The school has relented however and his suspension was shortened to two days, he returned to school on Tuesday.
Colon was appreciative of Betterson for having come to his aid and organized other students to protest Betterson’s suspension.
Griffin has been arrested and charged with battery.
