A flight home nearly ended in tragedy when a mom looked across the aisle and saw her three-year-old son choking on a chicken nugget. She couldn’t get to him while holding her six-month-old daughter, and started panicking. Luckily, the quick-thinking man sitting next to the boy performed a Heimlich maneuver and saved the day.
The hero turned out to be Representative Pete Gallego (D-Texas), Paige Hoch Flippen’s congressman. And he sure wasted no time in tweeting about his exploit.
3yr old on flight was choking. Mom panics-but I did same thing I did for Nicolás yrs ago.Young man is safe. I have chicken nuggets all over.

To which the grateful mom responded:
Gallego told Bridget Bowman from Roll Call, “I had my headphones on and was listening to some news articles,” when he saw the mom jump up with the baby and shout, “Oh my God, my son is choking! He’s choking!” Luckily, Gallego’s a dad and knew what to do.
The Texas congressman continued, “I turned around quickly and I had to unbuckle his seat belt.” He then performed the Heimlich maneuver, and three-year-old Cash Flippen promptly turned around and disgorged a vile-smelling mass of chicken nuggets onto his congressman’s chest.
Alas, this barely seems like adequate payback for Gallego’s vote for the “bipartisan” 2014 Farm Bill earlier this year. Thanks to that law’s vicious $8.6 billion worth of cuts in food stamps, millions of children now have less food to choke on.
Jeff Goldblatt from KENS 5 visited the Flippen family’s home a couple days later to get the story and ask Cash a couple questions. The boy replied with a three-year-old’s boisterous exuberance:
Goldblatt: What were you eating?
Goldblatt: And what happened?
Cash: I was CHOKING!
Cash’s mom added:
“I was very happy that a stranger jumped to my aid. Especially in this day in age I know people are scared to do anything […] It’s a story that my son will definitely have for the rest of his life”
Rep. Pete Gallego saves the day.
This bit of positive publicity might be just the thing Gallego needs for the tough race for reelection he’s facing.
