Ever since the idea of same-sex marriage equality was mentioned, Conservatives have predicted the demise of humanity like they were the next Nostradamus. According to them, if gay men and women are afforded the same right to marriage as straight individuals, the end of the world as we know it would be upon us. The fear behind their predictions is so strong that several leaders on the right plan to defy the Supreme Court ruling. So, what exactly is supposed to happen now since gay marriage has been ruled constitutional and is now legal? What horrible disaster is waiting for us right around the corner? Here are seven predictions Conservatives have made if gay marriage was legalized.
1. The End of Free Speech
“When you elevate a lifestyle to the status of a civil right, I don’t think a lot of believers fully understand or comprehend that once it’s risen to that level and our government accepts it, then anyone who disagrees, with it could be at least civilly liable, but more than likely would be criminally liable… won’t stop until there are no more churches, until there are no more people who are spreading the Gospel.”
2. Civil Disobedience
Conservatives issued a manifesto, the Manhattan Declaration, declaring they would defy any SCOTUS ruling backing gay marriage. Several leaders have tried to represent themselves as if they were the next Martin Luther King Jr. or Rosa Parks. Seriously.
They’ve tried to draw a comparison between defying gay marriage and the Civil Rights movement. Huckabee again had something to say about this.
“What if no one had acted in disobedience to the Dred Scott decision of 1857? What if the entire country had capitulated to judicial tyranny and we just said that because the Supreme Court in 1857 said that a black person wasn’t fully human? Suppose we had accepted that, suppose Abraham Lincoln, our president, had accepted that, would that have been the right course of action?”
OK. Let me just say this now. Considering the treatment Conservatives show toward black men and women, this argument is not only baseless and unfounded; it is insulting.
3. The Next Civil War
“This is the thing that revolutions literally are made of. This would be more devastating to our freedom, to our religious freedom, to the rights of pastors and their duty to be able to speak and to Christians around the country, then anything that the revolutionaries during the American Revolution even dreamed of facing. This would be the thing that revolutions are made of. This could split the country right in two. This could cause another civil war.”
James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family:
“The country can be no stronger than its families. I really believe if what the Supreme Court is about to do is carried through with, and it looks like it will be, then we’re going to see a general collapse in the next decade or two. I just am convinced of that. So we need to do everything we can to try to hold it back and to preserve the institution of marriage.”
“Like the Dred Scott decision that heralded the onset of the first Civil War, the Court’s action will bring the nation to the brink, whence ‘nothing but confusion and disorder will follow. …’ If the justices do not tread carefully, their temerity could very well set in motion the death throes of what is still supposed to be their country. ‘Forbid it, Almighty God!'”
WorldNetDaily editor, Joseph Farah:
“Will a U.S. Supreme Court decision declaring ‘same-sex marriage’ a ‘right’ warrant secession by some state willing and eager to reclaim America’s Judeo-Christian heritage and foundation? Is there one state in 50 that would not only defy the coming abomination, but secede in response? The rewards would be great. I would certainly consider relocating. How about you? If not a state, are there any nationas in the world interested in a pilgrimage by millions of Americans?”
5. The Next Holocaust
“Even in Nazi Germany, the government participated in genocide but the individuals, the citizens weren’t forced to participate in it … The people were not forced to push people into the gas chamber or pull the trigger, but now you’re being forced to pull the trigger, you’re being forced to participate in a genocide, that’s different than anything before.”
Family Research Council president Tony Perkins:
“I’m beginning to think, are re-education camps next? When are they going to start rolling out the boxcars to start hauling off Christians?”
6.Children Will Be Endangered
“Depending on what they rule, we would certainly make sure that we are protecting children and that we are creating an optimal atmosphere for every child, as I said, that have their birthright, which is to be raised by their mother and father.”
David Barton of WallBuilders on The Glenn Beck Show:
“Sex is going to be determined by an orientation. How many orientations are there? There’s 82 that you’ve identified. But I go back to 2009 when they did the Hate Crime Law to protect orientation. Our guys said ‘Hey let’s have an amendment that we’re not going to include pedophiles in that.’ Democrats said ‘No they are included in that. That’s part of orientation.’ So, orientation is anything including things that probably 95% of Americans would agree are not acceptable that becomes legally protected and you can’t discriminate against pedophiles.”
7. God’s Going To Be Pissed
Huckabee, yet again:
“There is no doubt in my mind that this country would not exist had it not been for the providential hand of God. And I’m also convinced that if we reject his hand of blessing, we will feel his hand of judgment.”
“God will use pagan armies to discipline his people if they turn from him in rebellion and disobedience and descend into debauchery… God will use the pagan armies of Allah to discipline the United States for our debauchery”
Pat Robertson, the 700 Club:
“We have to remember the term of sodomy came from a town that was known as Sodom and Sodom was destroyed by God Almighty and the thing that they practiced was homosexual activity and even they tried to rape angels who came down. So, that’s the kind of people they were. Beyond that, Jesus, when he spoke of Sodom, he didn’t say anything about the homosexuality. He talked about the fact that business was just as usual until God decided to destroy it… So, that’s where sodomy came from. The term means ‘sodom…’ We’re heading that way as a nation. In history, there’s never been a civilization ever in history that has embraced homosoexuality and turned away from traditional fidelity, traditional marriage, traditional child rearing and has survived. So what’s going to happen to America? Well, if history is any guide the same thing is going to happen to us. “
