“Dr.” Jon Basso, the owner of The Heart Attack Grill in Las Vegas, is unapologetic when touting his medically-themed hamburger restaurant.
Here, the waitresses dress as “naughty” nurses, patrons don hospital gowns before eating, Jello shots come in syringes, wine in IV bags on poles, and the “Quadruple Bypass Burger” carries a whopping 9,900+ calorie payload. The only side order is “Flatliner Fries,” which are fried in pure lard, and can be topped with chili and cheese if they don’t carry enough artery clogging cholesterol to satisfy on their own.
Two people have died of heart attacks while patronizing his restaurant, but the “Doctor” shrugs it off. When one of his “nurses” ran into the kitchen shouting that someone was having a heart attack, he replied:
All meals available in the restaurant come in unhealthy sizes. Patrons are not allowed to share, each must be eaten by one person alone. If a customer fails to finish his meal he will be paddled by one of the naughty nurses. The customer then gets the option of buying the paddle that punished him as a souvenir.
Basso proudly says that the Heart Attack Grill is “nutritional pornography,” and that the inspiration came to him as he wrote thesis on marketing in the fitness industry. He decided that if people could make a living by getting people fit and keeping them healthy, then he could more easily make one by doing the opposite. That’s how Basso came to launch a restaurant where the food is “so bad for you it’s shocking.”
Basso has tried to franchise the Heart Attack Grill, but the first one opened in Dallas in 2011, then closed after only five months in business.
Now the restaurant is being featured in a Showtime series 7 Deadly Sins, representing gluttony of course. In the trailer for the episode Basso says:
“We are the bad boys of hamburgers, our menu is purposely designed to be offensive. It’s absolutely as unhealthy as possible.”
He holds up his Single Bypass Burger, the smallest on the menu, explaining that it is a half pound burger with 5 slices of bacon, all fried in lard and smothered in chili, going on to show us the entire line up all the way to the Quadruple Bypass Burger which gets 20 slices of bacon, none of the burgers or fries are drained of the residual cooking grease, or as Basso calls it, unadulterated.
The Heart Attack Grill is aptly named.
