AWESOME Feminist and political analyst Zerlina Maxwell appeared on the Sean Hannity Show recently in a segment about the supposed disarming of American women. Hannity’s contention is that if more women were allowed to carry concealed weapons, then less rape would occur.
Maxwell dared to interject the outrageous notion that instead of focusing on how women could prevent being attacked, we should be proactively teaching men not to rape.
The reality is that we need to be changing how we train and teach young men. We need to teach them to see women as human beings and respect their bodily autonomy. We need to teach them about consent and to hold themselves accountable.
Of course, Hannity completely missed her point entirely.
No one, including Maxwell, is saying that rape would not still occur, but a majority of it is committed by someone the woman knows and trusts. We do need to switch the national conversation in this country from telling women “How to prevent being raped” to telling men “Do not rape women.”
This is a revealing article from Cracked called “5 Ways Men are Trained to Hate Women” that’s may shed some light on the subject. We think it’s a must read for everyone interested in understanding how we are manipulated from a very early age to see each other.
We know the Hannitys of the world, with their twisted black and white patriarchal thinking patterns, will always want to oversimplify the issue of rape so the answer is MORE GUNS, but there’s a hell of a lot more to it than that. For instance, as Maxwell asked, if guns are the answer then how come there is so much rape in the military? There are no easy answers, but engaging men in the conversation about rape and violence is crucial and cannot be ignored.
