If there’s one thing you don’t do in front of a bunch of gun psychos, it’s paint a giant target on your back. And in the gun nut community, nothing paints a bigger target on anybody’s back than suggesting moderate regulation of firearms based on legal precedent and an accurate assessment of modern circumstances. Do that, and you get your ass fired in a heartbeat — which is exactly what happened to the article’s author, Dick Metcalf.
Mere minutes after Metcalf’s article hit the news-stands (we still have those, right?), the Fringe Right immediate hit the magazine’s Facebook page accusing it of everything from collusion with communists, to being an Al Jazeera plant, to having been secretly taken over by Kenyan Marxists. Of course, none of that was true; it’s just that NOBODY tells the fringe Right, those protectors of ALL amendments equally, that the First Amendment might be as sacrosanct in one forum as any other.
For those who haven’t seen it, you can read the original article here, or check out our own Sky Palma’s summation of it here. But the very simple point was this, summed up succinctly in the article sidebar:
“The fact is, all constitutional rights are regulated. Always have been, and need to be.”
Of course, that sent the most vocal (read: ignorant, loudmouthed and bored) of the Guns and Ammo readership off the deep end; any suggestion of any regulation of any firearm is going to do that, no matter how moderate or well-reasoned that regulation may be. Any hint of support for any regulation will get you branded IMMEDIATELY as a “libtard communist” and an “enemy.” Even if your record says you’re anything but. This is Metcalf’s bio from G&A’s sister magazine, “Hunting“:
“Dick was born and raised on the family’s Illinois farm which dates back to the 1840’s. He grew up with a .22 behind the kitchen door and began shooting and hunting at a young age. He has been a contributor to Shooting Times magazine for more than thirty years and today serves as the Technical Editor for the InterMedia Outdoors Group. Dick is a veteran of the U.S. Army and a former faculty member of the history departments at Yale and Cornell Universities. In addition, Dick has hunted on five continents and was one of the pioneers of handgun hunting.”
Sounds like a gun-grabbing, screaming libtard if ever there was one. Illinois farm…yeah, RIGHT. Has anybody even SEEN this guy’s long-form birth certificate? He’s probably gay, too. Definitely. He probably only joined the Army for the “don’t ask, don’t tell” locker rooms. So, he was writing about guns for THIRTY YEARS? We can’t believe you ignorant deviant editors allowed him to secretly work for Kenyan Marxists that long without catching him. You should all be shot for treason.
So, there it is…where the far right is concerned, it’s either all guns for all people, or you’re a liberal Communist target in the New Civil War. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been a friend, how many decades you’ve spent supporting the cause, or what your background may be; you tow the line of ideological purity, or your ass is persona non grata at Guns and Ammo.
But, all is not lost for Dick Metcalf, because we’d like to make an offer: Dick, since you’ve officially been declared an enemy of the Dahk Side, you’re welcome to come write for AATTP. We can’t promise Petersen money, but we can promise that you won’t get fired for thinking for yourself. We don’t maintain our readership by pandering to thought-hammered psychotics.
Of course, AATTP, like any other publisher, has to maintain a certain readership, and doesn’t go out of its way to piss the regulars off. But sometimes we do. Sometimes, somebody needs to, and AATTP doesn’t suppress or fire writers for not toeing the Liberal party line. Trust me…I speak from experience.
We’re saving most of these for another article, listing some of the best gun-nut responses to Metcalf’s article and subsequent firing. But I thought I’d share this. It’s sampling of comments on a post I left on the Guns and Ammo Facebook page. Want to see how quickly you get declared an enemy of the Red State? Or how “gun ownership for all” has become utterly integral to “far-right ideology?” Matt F. literally implies that the “Guns and Ammo Magazine” Facebook page was a “conservative Republican website.” Never mind that 37% of gun owners lean Left, compared to 51% leaning Right.
Again, bear in mind that (per the bio) your author is a long-time gun enthusiast, and politically centrist (as shown in the example articles left in the replies).
Matt: F: Check out this guy’s home page. He’s a frothing liberal and Republican hater. Nothing you say has one bit of traction here after viewing the cartoon demeaning Republicans. You are a joke.
RR: Oh, I wasn’t aware that only right-wing, Teabagging Repulikkkans were allowed to like or own guns. Though I’m sure you’d prefer it that way…Pay attention G&A — THIS is your new demographic. You’re not about guns, technology and gun safety anymore…you’re a prop for the right wing.
Matt F: I don’t come on liberal sites and bait people knowing what the negative result will be, cue ball. Nearly every post on your home page is angry and hate-filled toward conservatives. Calling us KKK and Fascists is just another bait attempt. And referring to Tea Bagging is the purview of your orientation, you disgusting deviant.
RR: Oh…I’m sorry I don’t conform to your notion of ideological purity. I know that’s important to you people. Let me ask you something: When did “Guns and Ammo Magazine’s” facebook page become a “conservative Republican” site? You tell me…or, better yet, G&A tell me…when did THAT happen? Is G&A a political magazine now? I posted here as a gun owner and enthusiast who also happens to be a writer. I have just as much reason to be here and post my opinion as you do.
Matt F: You are pathetic. My home page is not riddled with political ideology. Yours is rife with ideological hate. So take a good look in the mirror (if you can stand the glare) and label yourself as we see you: dangerous and an enemy…I don’t hate, but will defend what I believe with my life…or yours. So here is where I get off your crazed, abhorrent plunge into Hell. Enjoy the ride.
RR: LOL…damn right (about how you see me). Don’t forget it. To religious-authoritarian fascists who want to create a society run by the richest and most powerful, a real American is the most dangerous enemy you can have.
