Okay, so it’s not quite President Obama, but it is a zombie named “Rocky”, which certainly bears a strong resemblance to our president, made by a gun supply company called Zombie Industries. The company is based in or near San Diego, California, and they have a Facebook page with the right-wing garden variety posts about “taking our guns”. The company, as you might have guessed by the name, specializes in producing zombie targets for gun enthusiasts. Below is a video of “Rocky” being shot up…
Whether you think “Rocky” was created with President Obama in mind or not, this is not the first time a fake President Obama has been used for target practice. A few months ago, someone posed a question in this article, complete with the below picture of a target depicting the real President Obama, asking if it was legal to use a fake president as target practice. Others in the comments section of the article confessed to using their own Obama targets.
As for the legality issue… yes, using a fake president as a gun target is indeed legal. It is protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution, which protects the right to free expression, including the right to shoot, burn, or in any way destroy an image of anyone including the president as long you’re not posing a “credible threat.” The standard here is whether there is genuine intent to commit or incite violence, and also whether that violence is likely to actually occur.
Legal or not, one may certainly question the judgement of those who choose to use a fake likeness of our president for target practice. No matter which president it is.
