President Obama surprised us all on Thursday when he stopped in Rochester for lunch on his way to Syracuse from Buffalo. In the days leading up to his bus trip there had been a lot of hard feelings around the city because the President, while making stops in Buffalo and Syracuse, was going to be merely passing Rochester, the third largest city in the state, and not stopping. Apparently someone made him aware of the perceived slight and he made hurried provisions to make a lunch stop at the Magnolia Deli on Park Avenue downtown in the city.
Several local college students were called and asked to participate in a panel discussion on education, they were told Wednesday afternoon that they would in fact be having lunch with the President, the details of the where and exact time were not revealed to them until just before the lunch. Over the lunch which the President paid for, as well as those of his Secret Service detail, they discussed with him the topic of this trip, to find ways to make a college education affordable for middle class families and avoid saddling the student with suffocating debt after college.
The President, when presented with a check for $89 with a 20% gratuity already added on included another $30 bring the total tip to $46. He greeted several people outside the deli on his way out before proceeding on to the Women’s Rights National Historic Park in Seneca Falls and then on to Syracuse where he spoke at a high school later in the day.
