Hans de Borst lost his only daughter when Malaysian Flight 17 crashed in the Eastern Ukraine last week. She was one of 298 people in that airplane, which was shot down by Russian separatists, evidence suggests.
Elsemiek de Borst was seventeen years old. She was on her way to Malaysia with her mother (de Borst’s ex-wife), stepfather and little brother for a holiday. And, just like that, an entire family is gone and a father is left to grieve.
Hans de Borst had to put his feelings down in words for his daughter’s murderers to read. He wrote an open letter to whoever may have shot down the jet liner. The English translation was posted to de Borst’s Facebook page.
Thank you very much mister Putin, leaders of the separatists or the Ukraine government!
For murdering my loved and only child, Elsemiek de Borst! She was 17 years old, 5th “gymnasium” student at the “Segbroek College” in Den Haag. And she was on her way to her holiday in Maleisië together with her little brother, her mom (my ex-wife) and her stepfather.
Elsemiek would have done her final school exams next year, together with her best friend Julia and Marina, she did so good in school! After that she wanted to go to the “Technical University Delft” to study engineering, she was looking forward to it!
But suddenly she is not here anymore! She has been shot out of the sky, in an unknown country, where there is a war going on!
Aforementioned misters, I hope you’re proud to have shot her, amongst other, young life and future. And that you will be able to look at yourself in the mirror tomorrow morning.
I hope you will receive this message, maybe translated in English (what you as an intelligent gentleman could read just fine)
Regards, Elsemiek’s father Hans de Borst from Monster, The Netherlands, whose life is ruined!! (editorial note: Monster is the town where he lives)
PS mister Putin, I hope that your intense conversation with our prime-minster (Mark) Rutte opened your eyes! I know you are impressed by this and I would find it impressive if you took the initiative to guard the crash-site with the Russian military, so the Dutch investigators can do their job. Thanks in advance.
That is the cost of war. Young lives, young futures wiped away. Parents who grieve those young lives. Families and friends who grieve for loved ones. What, exactly, was it worth? Whoever shot that plane down — and evidence suggests that it was pro-Russian forces — took away riches untold. Who knows what the victims could have done if they had been able to live out their lives, pursue their dreams and continue with their work.
If you are anything like me, you just hugged your child. Or will the next time you see him or her. Any parent… hell, any human being reading this letter can’t help but be moved. Perhaps Putin or the leaders of the separatists will read it and understand the true horror of their actions.
Our hearts go out to de Borst and everyone who lost loved ones in this disaster.
