Ben Carson must be up against it financially; according to Liberaland, Ben Carson wants to get paid to give presidential speeches.
Carson isn’t exactly setting a trend here; Huckabee did the same thing in 2008. It should be noted that it’s unusual for a candidate, Democrat or Republican, to do this; I was under the impression candidates made most of their money campaigning, not giving paid speeches, anyway.
Carson, however, appears to operate under a different set of social mores. According to the National Review, Carson’s presidential exploration committee did affirm that his schedule included paid speaking engagements running well into autumn 2015– long after he’s expected to announce his intentions to run:
A spokesman for Carson’s presidential exploratory committee confirmed to National Review that the possible Republican candidate’s schedule includes paid speaking engagements running into the autumn of 2015 — many months after he’s expected to declare his official candidacy. By maintaining these commitments, the famous-neurosurgeon-turned-GOP-hopeful would break with long-standing practice discouraging presidential candidates from collecting cash at the podium.
Carson’s team is tight-lipped about how much he will earn from these scheduled engagements, and how much he’s earned from such engagements in the past. But the mere fact that Carson plans to continue giving paid speeches well into the fall could fuel speculation that his long-shot presidential run is primarily an attempt to raise his profile, with an eye toward attracting more highly paid speaking gigs in the future
I’m surprised that Palin hasn’t done this yet, to be honest. Of course, her future in politics may well have been torpedoed following the utterly incoherent epic that she delivered at Representative Steven King’s “Freedom Summit” back in January, so it’s probably not even an option for her anymore.
The sad thing, though, is that the GOP will still line up, paying through the nose, to hear him say things like “We need guns to defend ourselves from terrorists flooding the southern border,” evolution and global warming are propaganda, call for illegal immigrants to be stripped for their citizenship, and plagiarize from reliable websites like SocialismSucks.net.
Let’s face it: even MiniTru didn’t charge for their propaganda.
