To begin, I would like to share with you this brilliant graphic from our friends at DemocraticUnderground.com
A new Quinnipiac poll shows that overwhelming majorities of Americans support universal background checks for gun purchases. According to the Quinnipiac University poll, 88% of Americans nationwide support universal background checks while only 10% oppose. Even among gun owners the vast majority support the checks, 85% to 13%.
This is as clear at could be, folks. The American people want universal background checks for all gun purchases. The NRA, Gun Owners Of America and other groups are run by psychopathic gun-nuts. NRA Chief, Wayne LaPierre is arguably the worst.
In an interview on Meet The Press with David Gregory, LaPierre dismissed the will of the American people by doing what he does best: Deny reality. Lie.
Gregory explained the poll numbers to LaPierre saying,
“Ninety percent of people want background checks. Among people who own guns, 85 percent support. Are you thwarting the will of the American people by standing in opposition to universal background checks?”
“No, not at all. Because here’s the thing, the whole thing — universal checks — is a dishonest premise. There’s not a bill on the Hill that provide a universal checks, criminals aren’t going to be checked, they’re not going to do this. The shooters in Tucson, in Aurora, in Newtown — they’re not going to be checked, they’re unrecognizable.”
LaPierre is a liar. The shooters in Tucson, Aurora, and Newtown COULD have been checked. Information already known about them could’ve been shared between agencies. But every gun “law” that’s ever been passed was sponsored by the NRA, ensuring our mass murderers would be the best armed in the world. We definitely agree with Michael Moore that the pictures of the Newtown victims should be leaked to the American people.
Nuts like LaPierre and others are lying when they say that they want to “enforce existing laws” as well. The so-called Tiahrt amendment came up for a vote in House Appropriations Committee in July 2003. Are you ready for this?
According to the Washington Post, “Under the law, investigators cannot reveal federal firearms tracing information that shows how often a dealer sells guns that end up seized in crimes. The law effectively shields retailers from lawsuits, academic study and public scrutiny. It also keeps the spotlight off the relationship between rogue gun dealers and the black market in firearms….The law removed from the public record a government database that traces guns recovered in crimes back to the dealers.
And this is just one example of the efforts of psycho gun-nut lobbyists like the NRA doing whatever it can to make sure untraceable guns, are bought and sold without any way of knowing who sold what, when and to whom. We had hoped Newtown was our wake up call. We were wrong. Unfortunately it might take another horrible tragedy before the American people wrestle our safety especially that of our children from the psycho gun nuts.
