“I presume you probably fit the category, children who were brought here,” Georgia’s GOP Governor Nathan Deal asked a Latina student and activist during an appearance at the University of Georgia in Atlanta. Deal was wrong.
“Never assume anything,” the old adage goes, “or else you’ll make an ‘ass’ out of ‘u’ or ‘me.'” Unfortunately, Republicans have a habit of assuming things, too many of which have little or no basis in fact.
CBS46 News reports the UGA College Republicans sponsored last week’s forum, where Deal came to answer questions on a variety of issues including immigration.
A contingent from the Undocumented Students Alliance attended the event and asked Deal about a Board of Regents policy that bars undocumented immigrants from attending UGA.
He turned towards Lizbeth Miranda — one of the activists — and replied:
“There’s a fundamental problem that can only be resolved at the Congressional level and that is to deal with the issue of children, and I presume you probably fit the category, children who were brought here.”
Miranda’s priceless response caused quite a stir.
“I’m not an illegal immigrant. I’m not. I don’t know why you would have thought that I was undocumented. Was it because I look Hispanic?”
fellow activist Carver Goodhue later told a reporter:
“I think it sends a message that he doesn’t believe that people who are not undocumented can believe in the rights of those who are undocumented. It’s very concerning to me. it’s almost reminiscent of people saying. well, if you’re not black, then you should’t be for civil rights.”
Of course, Deal’s campaign spokesman Brian Robinson claims Deal wasn’t even addressing Miranda, he was talking to Goodhue, an anglo-white male. Because, apparently, Deal’s so totally-not-racist he figured the white guy might very well be the one with the birth certificate problem.
“The governor was trying to have a civil conversation with a group determined to have a confrontation. He was courteous and civil. The entire thing was misrepresented. They were trying to ambush him.”
Deal assumes Miranda’s undocumented.
