Johnny James, a Tennessee city councilman was caught on tape during a 911 call threatening to murder a black man. James, however, did not just threaten a man’s life, he also called him the “N-word” during the call. Here’s what he said,
“If you don’t get 941 down here on Jim Dyke Road and Bright Road you’re gonna have one deceased black nigger down here.”
James was having a dispute with an unidentified black man who he claims refused to pay for service.
The two men shared heated words and exchanged blows in a physical altercation which resulted in James calling 911 from the safety of his wrecker truck.
James denies that he’s a racist, stating that he has “black friends.” Here’s what he had to say in his defense,
“I regret it, I wish it had never happened, but there’s nothing I can do about it, I can’t change what the past is,” James explained. “He kept agitating me, getting on my truck, agitating me, and he took me to the limit.”
When asked if he thought this was how a city Representative was supposed to behave, he said this
“I wasn’t acting as a city official. I was acting as a guy that owns a body shop… He pushed me further than I wanted to be pushed.”
This is not the first, nor will it be the last, story about a public official making racist remarks. Remember this story the next time someone tells you racism isn’t about power.
