Appearing on Face the Nation this Sunday, TEApublican Tim Huelskamp of Kansas was questioned by Bob Schieffer about the continuing shutdown and the threat of a default on debt payments by the government.
When Schieffer asked him what he and his fellow TEApublicans had accomplished he replied, “Not much yet. But we have to focus on Obamacare, and we have to focus on the underlying problem that’s been ignored for years, and that’s too much spending.”
Schieffer then interrupted and asked, “But congressman, don’t you have to focus on keeping the government running?”
Huelskamp was not going to be deterred from what he sees as a bigger problem than keeping the government running and paying the nations debts by returning to spending and Obamacare.
When Schieffer again interrupted to point out that it is important to not only the economy of this country, but also the rest of the world that the U.S. not default on its obligations, Huelskamp replied with a smug smirk. “There are no payments due on October 17 to pay our creditors, there are no payments due until November 15, that’s why Moody’s has indicated there will be no major impact here.”
Schieffer then pointed out that the Secretary of the Treasury disagrees, to which Huelskamp responded by saying,“He said a lot of things a week ago. I think the White House is trying to scare the markets. I think that’s unfortunate.”
With people of his ilk in the House, one has to wonder if they really do hate this President enough to destroy the entire world economy rather than allow him any small measure of success.
