Uh-oh. It’s that time of year again: Government shutdown season. And all this Michigan voter wants to know whether her Tea Party Congressman Dan Benishek plans on voting to shut down the U.S. government again.
Alas, she can’t get a straight answer, because Benishek keeps running away.
Eclectablog reports a woman approached Benishek with her video camera during a blood drive in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to ask whether he’ll vote against shutting down the government this time. Since Benishek’s a Republican, and a teabagger to boot, we know he’s likely to vote his party’s line.
But if Benishek votes for another government shutdown this month, he does so at his peril. He’s up for reelection this November and has only a 2.6 percent edge on his Democratic challenger Jerry Cannon. Normally, that would be a comfortable lead, but not if Election Day follows immediately on the heels of a fresh economic disaster.
Last year, the GOP-led government shutdown cost our economy $24 billion and angered Americans across the nation.
The woman asked, as Benishek walked away:
“Congressman, I just wanted to ask if you would be planning to vote no on the shutdown they’re talking about […]”
His aide said something inaudible and actually tried to grab the woman’s camera, but the woman persisted:
“I know, but he’s a congressman, I just had a question for him. I just wanted to know if you’ll vote no, when you get back to congress for the shutdown they’re talking about bringing up?”
At this point, one could be pardoned for expecting Benishek to defiantly stick his fingers in his ears and chant, “La La La! I can’t HEAR you!” But he just kept displaying his Amazing Ignoring Superpowers as he strode across the pavement with his aide scurrying behind him.
The woman once again boldly ventured:
“Sir? Please just answer the question. It’s a quick question.”
GOP lawmakers often remain personally well-liked by their constituents, but their toxic policies have grown increasingly unpopular with voters. Since plausible deniability is nearly impossible, there’s nothing left to do but flat-out refuse to discuss them at all.
No wonder Republicans across America have resorted to tactics like threatening to punch nosy reporters in the face, manhandling and arresting bloggers with video cameras, and Benishek’s tried and true tactic of simply running away from the tough questions.
