Republicans are absolutely obsessed over Obama being a crypto-Muslim. Supposedly, when you take your oath of office on the Bible, it’s some sort of magical promise and angles ring bells; Jesus is there and he gives you an autographed picture. Now, Obama’s oath didn’t mean anything, because it only works if you’re a Christian, since it’s on the Bible. So the logical conclusion, in a multicultural society without a religious requirement for office, is to ditch swearing an oath on the Bible and replace it with an oath sworn on something like the Constitution. Except John Brennan did that, and Conservatives lost the aplomb they never had when he did.
Does it make any sense? Oh, it makes perfect sense when you realize that they want only White Christian men in office.
So the Republicans continue to attack Obama for being a Muslim, like Benjamin Cole, Representative Aaron Schock’s (R-IL) communication’s director, who claimed that a Mosque should be built on White House grounds to accommodate President Barack Obama.
The post is from 2010. In it, he wrote that he “thinks they should build a mosque on the White House grounds.” When a commentator questioned the outrage about a proposed mosque near Ground Zero, Cole said that “I wasn’t talking about the Ground Zero mosque, I just think it would be nice for the President to have his own house of worship, since he’s not been able to find one suitable in DC since 2004 when he moved here.”
At the time that was wrote, a depressing number of Americans — 18% — believed he was a Muslim, despite Obama being a practicing Christian. There are still a depressing number of Republicans who are so unhinged and detached that they believe this; the rheopectic bubble they surround themselves with is so impervious that it’s my understanding that DARPA is looking to turn it into some sort of super-efficient body armor.
This isn’t the first time today Cole’s found himself in deep because of some stupid and ignorant thing he’s said on social media. I eagerly await to see the trolls defend him, calling him a “victim of the race card” or a “victim of the political correctness police.”
TPM speculates that the myth gained tract because Obama’s father was a Muslim, and conservative pundits latched onto it and repeatedly tied the President to it. In my opinion, it really caught on because Conservatives are flaming racists, and the idea of a black family in the White House has drove them well past the point of despair.
