An Arizona GOPer has admitted to serial trolling online political blogs, and posting horrifying comments that run a wide gamut of topics, such as abortion, the economy, and education.
Using the pseudonyms Falcon9 and Thucydides, Superintendent John Huppenthal says that he posted comments that called people on public assistance “lazy pigs” and blamed FDR for the Great Depression. According to AZ Family, while posting on Blog for Arizona last year as Falcon9, Huppenthal said that:
We now know that (Franklin D. Roosevelt) was almost completely responsible for the great depression. Only in liberal mythology did FDR ‘save’ the nation. … Worse yet, Roosevelt’s disastrous economic policies drug down the whole world and directly led to the rise of a no-name hack named Adolph Hitler who was going nowhere until Germany’s economy went into the tank.
Posting as Thucydides, Huppenthal left another comment on Seeing Red AZ in September 2013 that said:
It was Darwin, not Hitler, who named the Germans the master race. It was Darwin who expressed approval of eliminating both Jews and Africans. Hitler worked to eliminate the Jews. Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood was given the job of eliminating African-Americans. Hitler fed 6 million Jews into the ovens. Sanger has fed 16 million African-Americans into the abortion mills.
His reference to people on public assistance as “lazy pigs” comes from an earlier post on Blog for Arizona, where he suggested that small business owners and job creators are “being taxed to death” and that Obama “is rewarding lazy pigs with food stamps” (the parentheses were in the original post):
Successful small businessmen/job creators are being taxed to death.”
Meanwhile, Obama is rewarding the lazy pigs with food stamps (44 million people), air-conditioning, free health care, flat-screen TV’s (typical of ‘poor’ families).
Huppenthal, who the owners of the blogs suspected was behind the serial trolling, sent out a statement through his chief of staff saying that the controversial remarks were “taken out of context.” He also “apologized,” saying that “I sincerely regret if my comments have offended anyone.”
The statement ran more than a page.
Huppenthal has been in office since 1984, and has been a councilman in Chandler and a superintendent of public schools (that’s a scary thought), but is current running for re-election as the head of the Arizona Department of Education. He’s come under fire after recorded robocalls advocated Arizona’s school voucher program, and has faced opposition as a result of his support for the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards, which are from the Common Core, itself a lightning rod for controversy.
It’s not clear what the political fallout will be of Huppenthal’s serial trolling under the various pseudonyms. As for his online aliases, the Falcon 9 is a two-stage rocket made by SpaceX to launch satellites and spacecraft. Thucydides is best known as an Athenian historian and political philosopher (how’s that for irony?), but was also a general and is sometimes called the “Father of Realpolitik,” who wrote “The History of the Peloponnesian War.”
