Mason sent out a letter last week imploring voters to cast their ballots for Leath because “Obama is determined to be a dictator” and current sheriff Jimmy Harris, a Democrat, cannot be trusted to defend the people of DeKalb against the tyrant.
In her letter Mason said:
“Obama is determined to be a dictator with the executive orders he signs. He has left the US Constitution in shreds. If Obama decides to run again (against US law) or declares a National Emergency to suspend elections in 2016, what will our Democrat sheriff do? I am concerned he will go along with this lawless president.”
When Mother Jones asked Leath if he believes as Mason does that there is a danger of Obama seizing dictatorial powers he replied, “Oh, I sure do. I would hope every American in the country would…I don’t really know what he is capable of doing at this point. If martial law is declared by the president, he can’t be removed from office.”
Leath said that he was not aware that Mason was going to mail the letters but that he was glad that she had calling the letter “very sweet” and “very well written.”
Mother Jones was unable to contact Mason for comment but her husband, Frank Mason told them, “Based on what [Obama] has done, I don’t know what he might do.”
A local resident who received the letter tweeted a copy of it noting that the sheriff was following the example of other Republicans in the state by running against Obama.
Mason and Leath are on solid ground in the deep south, running a campaign capitalizing on the deep-seated fear and distrust of black men that may be a winning strategy as long as the latent racism remains.
