At last a Republican sees reason! Adam O’Neal, mayor of Belhaven, North Carolina, stood with the NC NAACP’s Rev. Dr. William Barber to make a public appeal to his state government and fellow party members, asking them to expand Medicaid coverage for both moral and practical reasons.
MSNBC reports O’Neal and a delegation of like-minded supporters traveled to the state capitol to voice his concerns about the future of healthcare in his home city and in the state as a whole.
[box type=”shadow”]”I am a Republican standing amongst a bunch of Democrats. . . No party is right all the time. We all make mistakes. And, we have an issue here that is common sense and logical and we need to take a new look at it. . . We’re talking about life or death here.”[/box]
He went on to discuss the importance of critical care hospitals and the important and necessary role they play – especially in rural communities.
[box type=”shadow”]“Our rural hospitals could barely survive in the past due to reimbursements for indigent care. Without Medicare expansion the reimbursements have fallen, and hospitals like the one in my home town are on the brink of closing. . . .If you don’t have critical access hospitals, people needlessly die.”[/box]
O’Neal recognizes that Republican leaders may lack faith in the government’s promises to provide funding and other support for the expansion program, but says that the people should not suffer for those concerns.
[box type=”shadow”]”In my opinion, to save lives and healthcare access, the state representatives should accept Medicaid expansion and then lobby the Federal government in order to meet any concerns they have. Use all the influence and power that our state government has to try and sure up those concerns.”[/box]
Access to healthcare is a people issue, not a partisan one says O’Neal.
[box type=”shadow”]”You can’t let hospitals close and people die to prove a point.”[/box]
