In an absurd attack on women’s rights, Ohio Republicans are pushing a bill forward that would ban insurance companies from covering abortions and even IUD contraception. Republican John Becker is the sponsor of the bill, claiming IUDs are a form of abortion. Becker doesn’t seem to care that his understanding of IUDs is completely wrong, stating “It’s just a personal view. I’m not a medical doctor.”
Conservatives have been pushing the idea of life beginning at conception for some time now, claiming that the moment a sperm fertilizes an egg, a baby-soul forms from the ether (even though up to 75% of fertilized eggs don’t come to term). However, even accepting that insane concept, IUDs still aren’t abortions. IUDs, like other contraceptives, work by either keeping the woman from ovulating or killing sperm before they get to the egg. At no point are they involved in terminating fertilized ovum. But Becker isn’t a medical doctor, so apparently he just makes up whatever ‘facts’ he likes.
And Ohio House Bill 351 not only bans coverage for abortions and some contraceptives but it also defines “therapeutic abortions” (as they call them) as any abortion in which the patient has not “diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy”. This of course leaves assault victims and women with potentially life-threatening pregnancies stuck paying their own medical bills. Not to mention it will leave numerous women living in poverty with few options when faced with an unwanted pregnancy.
Republican attacks on women have been relentless. While they claim to be pro-life, it’s clear they don’t care about children or their families. On top of that, even when presented clear evidence they are wrong , Republicans like Becker simply ignore it and continue pushing their “pro-life” agenda. But the attacks on abortion rights have nothing to do with conservatives being pro-life (because they aren’t). Between refusing to support income equality, battling against reproduction rights, and their general misogyny, what the GOP is trying to do is keep women under their thumb. And punish those that have sex without their permission.
