In another tragic episode of accidental shootings, this time in Texas, 13 year-old Emilee Bates was shot and killed by her step-brother — on her 13th birthday.
According to police, 19 year-old Austin McCord was cleaning his AK-47 and pulled the trigger, thinking the assault rifle was disabled. The gun went off, hitting his step-sister in the stomach.
“He believed he was making the weapon safe by pulling the trigger to drop the bolt on an empty chamber,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Police arrived at the home at about 8:30 pm where the two step-siblings were alone. According to reports, Emilee had been studying when the incident happened. She died later at the hospital at approximately 10 pm.The incident comes after a slew of accidental shootings have been reported in the media. Since December 2013, there have been roughly 140 accidental shootings in the U.S., with many of the instances involving children coming into contact with unattended guns.
Since this latest incident was deemed an accident, no charges will be filed.
