Appearing on Meet The Press yesterday, Franklin Graham could think of no better way to share the message of love, tolerance and peace that the founder of his religion brought to Earth according to accounts in the Bible, than by using the opportunity to do a little gay bashing. How Christian of him.
He of course found a way to include a shot at the new Pope by criticizing his tolerant stance on the subject of gays, saying that before he could change his stance, “god would have to shift, and god doesn’t.”
Graham’s position is perfectly in line with the stance of his church on the subject of homosexuality, it is evil, unnatural and God will punish them for it and therefore it should be illegal. The Southern Baptist Church only renounced its support for slavery in 1995, a century and a half after the civil war.
This would have been a golden opportunity for Harry Smith, he should have asked him about the church changing the word of God to be un-accepting of slavery when it had previously been used to prove that it was God’s will that white men own men and women of color. Sadly we will not get to hear how the pastor feels about that because Smith did not ask the question.
Of course that is the sort of question that Graham would not want to answer, it would put him in the position of having to explain whether we had just been reading the Bible wrong or if God had been wrong about slavery and made adjustments later to correct his error.
The one thing we can be sure of is that the Reverend Graham seems to think that Christmas, a time that has always been recognized as a time of peace and tolerance, is the proper time to attack the gay community and the Catholic Church.
