Recently on an edition of Fox and Friends Steve Doocy and Stuart Varney discussed a new group of “lazy takers” contributing to the decline of the nation, these loafers suckling at the government teat are those collecting Social Security Disability benefits. Many, according to Varney are not really disabled they have simply chosen the “option” of faking a disability over finding a job and working for a living.
“Are there simply more people who are becoming disabled, or are more people just simply becoming desperate?” Doocy asked Varney.
The response was typical of Fox and Varney:
[box type=”shadow”]I think it’s the latter. A lot of people are taking the disability option. We’ve got almost 11 million people in total now on Social Security disability. That is greater than the population of Greece. That is greater than the population of Tunisia. That is an all time record high. 10.988 million people on disability. Here is what happens. You get into your 40s and 50s, you’re out of work, you’ve exhausted your benefits. What are your options? You can’t get a job so you go on disability. That is an option. I can put it that way in this day and age. It is an option. The fact that you have nearly 11 million on disability is a mark of the failure of President Obama’s job creation program. If we were creating jobs the way we used to create jobs, you wouldn’t have this disability, dependency problem.[/box]
Varney is, of course, sticking to the channel’s Republican talking points with no regard for the actual facts. There have been jobs created on this administration’s watch, 8 million in the last 45 months.
Varney also is claiming that most of the people who have successfully applied for disability in recent years are simply lazy and not truly disabled. This is not only insulting to those people, it ignores other facts, such as the difficulty involved in obtaining approval of a disability claim and the fact that while there are 10.988 million Americans currently receiving disability benefits, it is estimated that there are actually about 57 million disabled people in the nation.
