Monday on The Daily Show host Jon Stewart issued an apology for a single error he made while discussing unarmed black men who have died at the hands of police. He had mistakenly included Dante Parker who succumbed to an overdose of PCP after being tasered repeatedly by San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies in August of this year.
“As you saw,” Stewart said after playing a short clip from the episode in question, “one of the examples that we used, out of many, came from San Bernadino County, California. Now, the D.A. there had some issues with this Jon Stewart fellers report.”
Stewart admitted that he had made an error when he included Parker in his list of black men shot by police, saying that he hates “making unforced errors like that” never making any attempt to excuse it or explain it away. He was wrong and he regretted his mistake.
Before Stewart got to admit his error and apologize for it, the gang at Fox & Friends seized the opportunity to “take the moral high ground” and went on the attack, castigating the “biased” liberal for his attempt to “slam the cops.” Of course with their “fair and balanced” news coverage, proven accurate 18 percent of the time, Fox is eminently qualified to make such a judgement.
“I deserved that,” Stewart said. “That’s just what I did with the one factual error that in no way changed the preponderance of evidence in the piece, but you know what, I got no one to blame but me.”
Stewart noted that the problem with working in “media counter errorism” is that you must be right 100 percent of the time while Fox only has to be right once.
Brian Kilmeade continued the attack saying:
“Just so you know, just to put these stats, in case Jon Stewart wants to include this tonight, 85 NYPD officers were killed after 9/11.”
That was the straw that broke the camels back. “F*ck you, Brian,” Stewart replied. “Seriously, f*ck you.”
“That is so far out of line that even within the confines of this bit, ostensibly accepting blame for everything that’s coming my way for the factual error, I really do regret, f*ck you, ears, eyes, nose and throat. In fact if I hadn’t told you to f*ck off I would have had to apologize on tomorrow night’s show for being factually incorrect.”
