Todd Starnes of Fox News went on a homophobic tirade Tuesday after President Obama signed an executive order to end discrimination by federal contractors. Starnes seems to think equality and non-discrimination are nothing more than political correctness being forced by a “militant LGBT agenda”.
In an angry column on foxnews.com, Starnes claims the president’s attempt at more equality in the workforce is somehow an attack on religious liberties. Starnes quotes Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council (a hate group) claiming the order is “viewpoint blackmail” and that not allowing religious groups to discriminate against homosexuals is somehow forcing them to accept their lifestyle”
“‘The mask is coming off of the homosexual movement’s agenda. They really do not believe in religious liberty. They want forced affirmation of homosexual and transgender conduct to trump every other consideration in the workplace – including religious liberty.'”
As always, Starnes is another psychotic mouthpiece of the Religious Right, claiming that any attempt to equalize their majority control is somehow attacking their “religious freedoms”. He even seems to think that seeking equality for homosexuals is giving them some sort of special privilege: “This administration believes gay rights trump everyone else’s rights – including religious rights.”
Of course none of this actually has any affect on religious liberties. Those liberties are only guaranteed so far as they don’t impinge on someone else’s rights. This isn’t a case of “gay rights” (which isn’t a real thing) infringing on religious rights. It’s really a matter of the Christian Right’s religious privileges infringing on the civil liberties of the LGBT community. Basically, as always, Starnes and Fox News have everything exactly backwards.
