FOX News correspondent Chris Wallace has revealed that he was sent opposition research on Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) by his fellow Republicans.
Wallace told FOX News Sunday that after it was announced the junior senator from Texas would be a guest on his show, he was sent “unsolicited” opposition research questions from what he described as “senior Republicans” who have been left angry and frustrated by Cruz.
Cruz has lead the charge in the latest Republican attempt to defund the Affordable Care Act known as Obamacare. Wallace said the questions and research were designed to “hammer” Cruz. He described the episode as “one of the strangest weeks I’ve had in Washington.”
Karl Rove told Wallace that the anger in this instance was not just based on the knowledge that the Democrats will successfully block any attempt to defund Obamacare. The GOP leadership, according to Rove, has been increasingly frustrated with Cruz and his allies’ refusal to consult with them over their plans. “Instead they have dictated to their colleagues through the media,” Rove said.
Rove went on to caution that unless Cruz is prepared to treat his colleagues in Congress “with a certain amount of respect,” the Republicans would have no chance of of building a congressional majority. He also pointed out that Cruz was wrong to say that the public supported his effort to repeal Obamacare. A recent poll in the Wall Street Journal showed the Democrats hold an eight point advantage over Republicans when it comes to healthcare.
