With the right wing media going into an all-out mouth-frothing frenzy over Festivus poles and the “war on Christmas,” Fox News host Megyn Kelly couldn’t help but dive into the media orgy on Wednesday night with a tangent intended on reassuring the children of the world that Jesus and Santa are, and forever will, remain white.
Not only did the segment garner Kelly the attention she was looking for, it also resulted in Fox News making an almost unprecedented decision that saw Megyn Kelly booted off of her own show for a night over the remarks. Apparently there is indeed a line you can cross at Fox News. Who knew?
Kelly was responding to an article written on Slate.com that suggested good old Saint Nick be replaced by a penguin, given that the holiday patriarch is almost universally depicted as white in an ever increasingly colour diversified world. That wasn’t going to go unchallenged, not on Megyn Kelly’s watch.
“For all you kids watching at home, Santa just is white,” Kelly said. “But this person is just arguing that maybe we should also have a black Santa. But Santa is what he is.”
And then she had to bring Jesus into it.
“Just because it makes you feel uncomfortable doesn’t mean it has to change, you know?” she added. “I mean, Jesus was a white man too. He was a historical figure, that’s a verifiable fact, as is Santa — I just want the kids watching to know that.”
That’s right folks, she wasn’t speaking to the parents or the adults in the room during her 9 p.m. show, she was speaking to the throngs of children still young enough to believe in Santa who were up past their bedtimes glued to the “Kelly File” program.
It didn’t take long for Kelly’s comments to start generating a generous amount of ad revenue on news sites around the world reporting on her little chat with the children of the world, and by Thursday night when the “Kelly File” hit the airwaves, there sat guest host Martha MacCallum. There was no explanation given at the time, but during an appearance on “The Tonight Show” Thursday Kelly claimed that she was off due to illness. Cough.
Megyn Kelly is expected to return to her show tonight where she will address the comments she made on Wednesday. There’s still enough time for all of you to start an office collection and chip in for some Sucrets and Sudafed for Kelly to send along with your heartfelt “get better soon” card.
Poor thing, it’s going to be hard eating crow with a sore throat.
