In the Talking Points Memo on his Thursday show, Bill O’Reilly accused President Obama of “declaring war on the Republican party” with an executive order that will grant “amnesty” to millions of undocumented immigrants.
“Fox News is reporting that, within the next few days, Mr. Obama will grant legal status to more than 4 million undocumented aliens currently in the U.S.A.,” he said.
The Fox report that he is referring to does say that, but it also says that press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters traveling with the President on Thursday that the President has not made any final decisions on the 10 part plan being drafted by an unnamed government agency. But, as usual, it did not stop the channel or O’Reilly from claiming that an executive order is imminent.
“Not giving the new congress time to put together an immigration bill,” he continued, “that’s insulting to the new congress.”
He went on to note that Republicans are united in opposition to any executive orders addressing the immigration problem and the as yet non-existent unilateral action by the president, saying “there will be consequences.”
There is already talk from the Republican side about holding a spending bill due early next month hostage over any orders the President might issue. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) has said that since congress holds the purse strings, Republicans will act to prevent any spending to enforce such an order, pointing out that they had used similar tactics to prevent the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility.
O’Reilly said that the Republican reaction to an executive order on immigration would be “terrible for the country” but that the president “doesn’t seem to care.” It is not an urgent issue which could wait a few months but the president is angry over the results of the election and “decided to tear the country apart” rather than wait, he claimed.
