Dr. Keith Ablow, the resident “psychiatrist” at Fox News and long distance diagnostician extraordinaire, has determined that it was not the gun or the shooter in the movie theater in Florida who are to blame for the death of Chad Oulson, a 43 year-old father shot to death for having sent a text to his daughter.
In his zeal to defend his political position, Ablow has created a new psychological disorder which he calls “data rage.” According to him, technologically advanced “machines” can dehumanize people and cause unintended consequences, he says that his new invention is similar to road rage.
“I think we may have to look at something I’ll call data rage,” Ablow. said. “Just like road rage. We know that when people interact with machines that sometimes they feel emboldened to do things that they never would, that it can be tremendously frustrating and that people who could be vulnerable — by the way, they may be impulsive to begin with or explosive — add in technology or a machine and things can go over the top.”
When asked if he was blaming the victim he responded, “We’ve got to blame the shooter here. But in understanding it, we’ve got to say, ‘Wow, that’s interesting, there was a machine involved.’ Now, we also know in road rage there is a car involved. People seem to be dehumanized by the presence of this car and the fact that they can’t then connect to the individual.”
What is more interesting is the fact that Ablow thinks of a cell phone or computer as a machine but never describes the gun used as a machine.
With the recent revelation that the shooter, Curtis Reeves, had another similar confrontation last month in the same theater, it seems that a competent psychiatrist would instead be looking at a pattern of behavior and questioning if he was competent to be carrying or even owning a weapon.
