John Coleman, co-founder of the Weather Channel was back again on Sunday telling host Brian Stelter on CNN’s Reliable Sources that “there’s no global warming.”
Unlike the amiable curmudgeon he portrayed last Monday when he appeared on Fox News’ The Kelly Files, he was openly surly throughout the interview, talking over Stelter and scowling most of the time.
Leading into his introduction of Coleman, Stelter noted that he was a founder of the Weather Channel and its first CEO which made his position unique and that after his appearance on Fox the channel had issued a statement making it clear that he no longer has any affiliation with the channel and has not for more than 30 years.
“I resent you calling me a denier, that is a word meant to put me down,” Coleman snapped as soon as he was introduced. “I’m a skeptic about climate change, not a denier.”
Almost immediately after that he denied that there has been any climate change and that there is no reason to believe that there ever will be.
“I want to make it darn clear, Mr. Kenny (CEO of the Weather Channel) is not a scientist, I am,” Coleman lied.
As we reported last week Coleman earned a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from that University of Illinois-Champaign in 1957 and while he reported on the weather for his entire broadcasting career he never even obtained an AMS Seal of Approval as a weather broadcaster, nor was he a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist which requires a degree in meteorology.
He went on to admonish Stelter saying:
“CNN has taken a very strong position on global warming that it is a consensus. Well there is no consensus in science. Science isn’t a vote. Science is about facts. …It has been become a big political point of the Democratic Party and part of their platform, but the science is on my side.”
Of course it isn’t but then he trotted out another of his faulty claims saying that there are 31,000 scientists in the U.S. alone who say that the whole climate change discussion is a political hoax.
The argument fails because those scientists he is talking about are not climate scientists, at least for the most part, there are not that many climate scientists in the U.S. and many of the scientists who have signed his petition are classified as scientists by casting a broad net. Technically a doctor or dentist, even a veterinarian could all be called scientists.
Coleman went on to claim that the government is responsible for all the science that has found that we are responsible for the climate change we are experiencing. According to Coleman, only scientists who will say that climate change is real and that we are causing it are the beneficiaries of all the money that the government invests in research. He completely overlooks the fact that scientists from all over the world have reached the same conclusions independently.
