According to Focus on the Family’s founder, Dr. James Dobson, a supreme court ruling in favor of gay marriage could spark a second “Civil War.”
Dobson made the remarks during a recent conference call, when he announced that a ruling in favor of gay marriage would start a second “Civil War.” Dobson told anti-gay bigot Janet Porter, the Liberty Counsel’s Matt Staver, Vision America’s Rick Scarborough, and Americans For Truth About Homosexuality’s Peter LeBarbera, “we could have another [Civil War] over this,” and, “The country can be no stronger than its families.”
I really believe if what the Supreme Court is about to do is carried through with, and it looks like it will be, then we’re going to see a general collapse in the next decade or two. I just am convinced of that. So we need to do everything we can to try to hold it back and to preserve the institution of marriage.
Except they won’t, because none of these yahoos are brave enough to actually follow through. The mere idea that right-wingers would start a “civil war” is hilarious. Dobson is just mad that nobody is listening to his temper tantrums anymore.
Right-wing ethics, in so much as you’re willing to insult actual ethics with the comparison, boil down to something like moral nihilism. Morality doesn’t matter if there isn’t a big bully with a big stick called Hell threatening to punish you for all eternity because you sneezed in church. It’s the punishment, not the morality, that matters.
But society operates at a level higher than Kolhberg stage 1, and will continue to move forward with, or — preferably — without people like Dobson.
