A petition drive is under way in Duval County Florida to change the name of Nathan B. Forrest High School in Jacksonville.
Let’s take a moment and explore the life of Mr. Forrest.
He was an officer in the Confederate Army who during the war, allowed his troops to kill black Union soldiers that had been taken prisoner.
Back to the life and times.
Prior to the Civil War, Forrest was a slave owner and trader, overseeing more than a 100 slaves on two plantations.
He also happened to be the first Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan.
In 1959 this school was renamed to honor Forrest. Currently only members of the school board can change it.
However, the petition has already garnered 160,000 signatures.
But the KKK is not taking this lying down. They have written to each board member, emphasizing their desire to keep Forrest as the name of the High School.
