Christopher Finlayson, of Winter Haven, is being held without bail on the charge of aggravated child assault for throwing an 11-month-old girl across the room because the baby wouldn’t stop crying.
Finlayson, 24, told the detectives that he “lost it” and hurled the infant across the room, face first into the floor, telling her “I’ll give you something to cry about.”
The infant was in stable condition at Tampa’s St. Joseph’s Hospital with a skull fracture, two broken wrists, and five broken ribs following the attack.
Police said that Finlayson was babysitting the child when she began crying. He tried to comfort her, but he tripped over a futon and dropped the child face first on the floor. The infant began screaming, and he attempted to toss her in the air to distract her. When that didn’t work, he picked up the child and threw her across the room, and then put her back to bed again. When the mother returned home, she found her child non-responsive, and when she questioned Finlayson about what happened, he said the child hit her head on the playpen. The mother took the child to emergency care, which contacted the sheriff’s office.
Finlayson didn’t admit to dropping the child until he was confronted at the hospital and taken into custody, according to the affidavit. While being questioned, Finlayson admitted to smoking a “blunt-and-a-half” of marijuana and staying up the night before. He was then taken into custody, and is being held without bail.
