“This one hits close to home. We are headquartered in Shawnee, KS, about 4.5 hours northeast of Moore, OK. We’ve seen tornadoes. We know people that lived through the Joplin, MO tornadoes. We know people whose homes have been devastated by violent storms. What happened outside of Oklahoma City is nothing short of a natural disaster.”

From KREXTV.com:

NUCLA, Colo. Newly-signed gun control laws in Colorado have some folks in the state concerned about the future of their Second Amendment rights.

One Western Colorado town is taking a stand to not only protect those rights, but protect it’s citizens from criminals. With some exemptions, the head of each household is now required to maintain a firearm.

Pro tem mayor and town trustee Richard Craig brought the idea to the town. “Every head of the household residing in town limits is required to maintain a firearm together with ammunition thereafter. Criminals are put on notice, period. We are armed.” he said.

In a five to one vote, Nucla trustees passed the ordinance.

One Nucla resident, Bill Long, echoes our objections to this ridiculously invasive ordinance saying, “We’re not being consistent, saying we don’t want government in our lives but here we are saying everybody’s got to own a gun.”

Um, yeah.

The ordinance is obviously symbolic as exemptions include criminals, the mentally ill, people who can’t afford to buy a gun and those opposed to firearm ownership because of religious or other reasons. Still, making something mandatory is a strange way of protesting alleged government overreach. What do you think, AATTPers? Let us know in the comments below.

Prayers?! Aren’t you a Senator???

Ooooooklahoma where the winds tear up your homes…. at least he prayed?

The death count is rising on the latest storm with winds of 200mph and being counted in as the second most powerful tornado historically to hit the state. You would think that the Senators would be scrambling to get FEMA aid to their state ASAP, but instead I guess they are both busy praying that they don’t have to do their jobs.

Inhofe recalls his last time he dealt with FEMA in this video about separating FEMA from the DHS budget.

Inhofe basically shifts blame off of “Brownie” and the Bush administration for Katrina while proposing a bill which would also neuter FEMA’s funding. He goes on about a story that includes his wife being without power for 9 days. It’s mostly just filling time with words, but the bill itself was a bit strange considering the source of the story… he states a case that his constituents will just “live through [disasters]” and get through them whether FEMA is there or not. He keeps invoking Hillary Clinton’s support of removing FEMA from DHS, but leaves out the non-support of his final bill.

FEMA might need more oversight or better structuring, but neutering it in the middle of all of this mythical bad weather caused by mythical climate change which seems to get hypothetically worse every year is probably not the smartest plan.

Since I really hate watching Senators speaking as they try to master the art of putting people to sleep while they talk… here is some Colbert on FEMA and the “Waffle House Index”.

She said, “So now we find out these people are making decisions based on our politics and beliefs, and they’re going to be in charge of our health care. There’s a huge national database that’s being created right now. Your health care, my health care, all the Fox viewers’ health care, their personal, intimate, most close to the vest secrets will be in that database, and the IRS is in charge of that database? So the IRS will have the ability potentially — will they? — to deny health care, to deny access, to delay health care? This is serious! Based upon our political beliefs? That’s why we have to repeal Obamacare. And I still think it’s possible.”

In order to do so, she was forced to make the false claim that the IRS is “going to be in charge of our healthcare”.

As usual, Politifact.com assessed the validity of Bachmann’s bizarre statement and found it to be completely false:

The IRS has a number of roles in implementing the health care law — the agency has posted alist that includes everything from levying additional payroll taxes on certain high-income Americans to taxation of medical devices and brand-name drugs. Its best known role, beginning in 2014, is to confirm that a taxpayer has health insurance and to assess a financial penalty if they do not. (The penalties start at $95 per adult in 2013 and rise to $695 per adult in 2016.)

In another fact-check, we discussed another key role for the IRS — approving subsidies for Americans seeking insurance on the newly created health exchanges. To do this, the IRS will need to check its databases to make sure an applicant is eligible to receive subsidies.

But while we noted that any technical failures in carrying out this task could be problematic, it would be a huge stretch to say that this power puts the IRS “in charge of our health care.”

For one thing, most Americans will not see any dramatic change in how they obtain insurance, since the law leaves in place the existing system of health coverage provided by employers.

To claim that one portion of the government — the IRS — is going to run health care is even more far-fetched. The IRS will have nothing to do with the nuts-and-bolts provision of health care to Americans.

Even among federal agencies, the law puts far more responsibility in the hands of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Dan Kotman, a spokesman for Bachmann, explained her comment by saying that “the Supreme Court ruled that Obamacare only meets the constitutionality standard as a tax, and the entity in the United States that enforces tax policy is the IRS. If you don’t comply with Obamacare’s individual mandate, you will be answering to the IRS. That is clearly the context she’s talking within because she had just said, ‘The IRS, Greta, is the chief enforcer of Obamacare.’”

But several health policy experts agreed that’s not the same as the IRS being “in charge of our health care.”

William McBride, an economist with the business-backed Tax Foundation, said the IRS has been tasked with “a tremendous amount” and that the agency is in “uncharted territory,” but he added that he doubts the IRS “will effectively control much of anything related to health care.”

Other health policy specialists were even more blunt. “Not accurate,” said Gail Wilensky, who headed Medicare and Medicaid under President George H.W. Bush and who is now a health policy consultant. It’s a “ludicrous statement,” said Jonathan Oberlander, professor of social medicine and health policy and management at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Our ruling

Bachmann said the IRS is “going to be in charge of our health care.” The IRS does play a number of key roles under the health care law, but it’s wrong to say it would “be in charge” of any American’s health care. The IRS won’t oversee interactions between doctors and patients, nor will it play any more of a role than confirming that exchange purchasers qualify for subsidies. Even within the government, HHS plays a much bigger role. We rate Bachmann’s claim False.

It’s clear that the political operatives that script her narrative know full well that the IRS’s role in implementing Obamacare will largely be to help verify that Americans receive the health insurance subsidy they desperately need in order to gain access to quality healthcare–nothing more.

The fact that Bachmann is so brazenly willing to repeat a lie that will scare Americans into opposing a much-needed historic reform that evaded U.S. Presidents for almost 100 years speaks volumes about her ethics, morals, and self-purported religious righteousness.

Not even the fact that her claim in 2010 that Obamacare amounts to a “government takeover of healthcare” earned her the esteemed award for Politifact’s Lie of the Year, has stopped this mean-spirited woman from spouting her lies and it’s up to progressives to keep fact-checking her and setting the record straight as often as possible. It’s easy to write-off Bachmann and other nutty TEApublicans as crazy and just hope that they’ll go away, but remember; hoards of Americans listen to a believe their dangerous lies and the only way to truly combat their lunacy is to bring them out of the darkness and expose them.

The IRS targeting is something that the Washington Post doesn’t seem to want to let down on with an article from their fact checker recently. The Post examined the claim of the IRS only flagging 501(c)4 organizations because the numbers had “doubled” in applications from prior years. They gave the claim “4 Pinocchios” (their rating system for lies) after showing numbers specifically for 2009, 2010, and 2011. I got stuck on their number at 2011 which they claimed was far from “double” the previous year and fairly, their numbers showed around a 50% growth, only half of what was being written by media. I think the Post needs to fact-check their fact checker.

They could ask their current guy, but they are afraid to open the box.

While reading through the numbers, I found that articles from Raw Story, Politics USA, and Think Progress (among many others) had included the 2012 numbers which could only be estimated by the Washington Post’s admission in their article. However, the numbers listed for the previous years were nearly the same if not exact in most cases. However, here is where the spin sets in to try to get the Tea Party back on a list of being victimized by the IRS unfairly.

The claims made by the Washington Post asserted the numbers were being blown out of proportion to make the IRS less scandalous in this matter. However, if you do run by the estimates of 2012 and compare them to 2010, they do appear to double in that time frame which would be on the low end of total growth. When one compares 2011 to 2010 then it only scales towards doubling in 2012. 4 Pinocchios? I think that was more than a little harsh and a bit of a spin on facts. If the Washington Post has integrity, they will compare the data from 501(c)4′s prior to 2009 in order to determine if the scale was something to be flagged.

Wait this is math? F**k this @#$% !

In the middle of the IRS documents I found a nice word in the description of 501(c)4 groups which caught my attention: Intermediate Sanctions. This wasn’t a familiar term for me, and it seemed to be the main enforcement of how to judge whether or not to flag an application for the tax-free status. What I found was The Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR). TABOR was written by Conservatives and Libertarians in the 90′s and part of the concept also seemed to target possible charity groups which in the 90′s were more left-leaning than not. Following 9-11, we had a surge of Conservative charities become flush with more cash and we got to see Oliver North become insanely wealthy. The Taxpayer Bill of Rights was implemented in 1992 and then replaced by a second revision in 1996 which was finalized in 2001. The regulations built into the TABOR included possible ‘intermediate sanctions‘ for anyone that might be trying to abuse charitable groups. Ten years later and with the onset of the Citizen’s United ruling… we get “IRS targets Conservative Groups!!!”.

Remember to praise Israel in every breath. Seriously, guys. I totally screwed that one up once before.

Yes, the regulations that Conservatives and Libertarians wrote themselves in the 90′s are the same regulations which led the IRS to believe they could flag new charities. This wasn’t an Obama administration or even Clinton administration creation. This was built by the GOP. Which means that since the Conservatives are yelling the loudest about being flagged… they must have forgotten.

(from Wikipedia)

Intermediate sanctions is a term used in regulations enacted by the United States Internal Revenue Service that is applied to non-profit organizations who engage in transactions that inure to the benefit of a disqualified person within the organization. These regulations allow the IRS to penalize the organization and the disqualified person receiving the benefit. Intermediate sanctions may be imposed either in addition to or instead of revocation of the exempt status of the organization.

The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.

Of course, it’s a well-known attribute of conservatives to see things in black and white while often missing more nuanced aspects of real life. In Fincher’s warped mind, people that need help are just lazy moochers who should simply pull themselves up by their bootstraps, even though, as most liberals know, many of these people don’t even have boots–or functioning feet in the context of this analogy–for that matter.

We have three points to make to Mr. Fincher and anyone else who buys into this absurd and disturbing way of thinking.

1. Most people on SNAP are not “unwilling” to work. Food insecurity is a real problem in America, but indolence is not to blame. From a Center on Policy and Budget Priorities (cbpp.org) piece titled, Contrary to “Entitlement Society” Rhetoric, Over Nine-Tenths of Entitlement Benefits Go to Elderly, Disabled, or Working Household:

Some conservative critics of federal social programs, including leading presidential candidates, are sounding an alarm that the United States is rapidly becoming an “entitlement society” in which social programs are undermining the work ethic and creating a large class of Americans who prefer to depend on government benefits rather than work. A new CBPP analysis of budget and Census data, however, shows that more than 90 percent of the benefit dollars that entitlement and other mandatory programs spend go to assist people who are elderly, seriously disabled, or members of working households — not to able-bodied, working-age Americans who choose not to work. This figure has changed little in the past few years.

Conservatives have also proven to be shameless lying hypocrites in many cases. Take Mark Sanford, who just won a congressional seat in South Carolina, for example. After much finger-wagging, Mr. Sanford voted to impeach President Clinton over the Lewinsky sex scandal, yet asked for forgiveness–without any sense of irony–after being caught romping with his mistress in South America on the tax payer’s dime. It would seem Rep. Fincher also fits this mold.

2. Hypocrite Fincher took millions in farm subsidies. From AlterNet:

The reason this is even more egregious than the usual Republican class warfare is that Fincher himself is a poster boy for government dependency. It’s not just that he’s benefited here and there from some government help. That sort of low-level hypocrisy is almost to be expected from these types. But Fincher has received millions - $3.2 million as of June 2010 – in federal crop subsidies. The people who refer to themselves as Tea Partiers threatened to derail his candidacy over this, but then they realized that they have no principles, and supported him anyway. He’s now a member of the “Tea Party Caucus,” which, amazingly, is something that actually exists. Fincher’s brother and father also snatched another $6.7 million in subsidies as Stephen geared up to run for Congress on a platform of eliminating “wasteful government spending.” The “wasteful spending” that he had in mind, of course, was that which serves policy aims with which he disagrees, such as keeping poor people alive.

And, finally, let’s examine the TEApublican’s penchant for cherry-picking documents to suit their agendas. Whether it be the Constitution or the Holy Bible, these folks love to take what fits into their preconceived narrative and leave the rest behind. Fincher is clearly no exception.

3. The Bible also says:

The Old Testament

Psa. 82:3 Give fair judgment to the poor man, the afflicted, the fatherless, the destitute.

Prov. 14:31 Anyone who oppresses the poor is insulting God who made them. To help the poor is to honor God.

Prov28:27 If you give to the poor, your needs will be supplied! But a curse upon those who close their eyes to poverty.

Prov22:9 Happy is the generous man, the one who feeds the poor.

The New Testament

Isa. 58:7 I want you to share your food with the hungry and bring right into your own homes those who are helpless, poor, and destitute. Clothe those who are cold, and don’t hide from relatives who need your help. Isa. 58:8 If you do these things, God will shed his own glorious light upon you. He will heal you; your godliness will lead you forward, goodness will be a shield before you, and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind. Isa. 58:9 Then, when you call, the Lord will answer. ‘Yes, I am here,’ he will quickly reply. All you need to do is to stop oppressing the weak and stop making false accusations and spreading vicious rumors! Isa. 58:10 Feed the hungry! Help those in trouble! Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you shall be as bright as day.

Doesn’t exactly sound ambiguous, now does it? False accusations and vicious rumors, Mr. Fincher–THAT is was you’re spreading, as it’s obvious that your assertions quickly dissolve when bathed in the light of facts. It’s not children, elderly, disabled and working poor Americans who get food assistance that should be ashamed of themselves; it’s you and the rest of your factually-bankrupt, judgmental TEApublican ilk who should.

Keyes, a twisted TEAvangelical lunatic, appeared on Stan Solomon’s show. Solomon is as sick as they come, is notorious for propagating disgusting claims such as liberals liked the Boston Bombing, and that President Obama is raising a black army to slaughter white Americans.

Keyes says President Obama, “…could very well be working a strategy that collaborates with and comports with the strategy of the very people who are trying to kill us, telling us we’re not at war so we won’t prepare.”

Why, you might ask? It’s simple, that is, if you’re a deranged psychopath like Keyes. President Obama, according to Keyes needs to work with terrorists to attack Americans in order to obtain “the tools and instruments that would be needed to fasten the structure of martial law and totalitarian tyranny on this country by force.”

Though there is no evidence, that didn’t stop McConnell and other shameless TEApublicans from insinuating that President Obama used the IRS to intentionally intimidate conservative groups.

McConnell told Meet The Press host David Gregory

, “There is a culture of intimidation throughout the administration, The IRS is just the most recent example.”

The usually weak David Gregory responded,

“Do you have any evidence that the President of the United States directed what you call a culture of intimidation at the IRS to target political opponents?”

“I don’t think we know what the facts are,” McConnell suggested, lying through his teeth.

Gregory responded, “That hasn’t stopped you from accusing.”

So the degenerate lying TEApublicans continue their witch hunt, even though they admitted they have no evidence to support it. This goes to show you that they hate President Obama more than they love America, and that they’re willing to destroy the whole country, if need be, in order to destroy him. But it’s not working. President Obama’s approval rating is climbing in the face of these manufactured TEApublican scandals, which suggests that the American people as a whole aren’t as stupid as the TEApublicans think.

There was an article very eloquently written in the National Review Online by Jay Nordlinger titled, Rise of an Epithet. In it contains some of that proof of early Tea Party leaping before looking–things they have been desperate to change ever since. The original location of the article is… here. Jay Nordlinger is the senior editor for the National Review Online which is a conservative news organization founded by William F. Buckley Jr. Buckley is noted for his support of McCarthy and his ability to scrub out Communists from Hollywood (aka target Jewish people). He wrote a book on the subject and then went on to produce his own news journal which somehow turned into an anti-Semitic haterpalooza that even Buckley had to walk away from to start a new publication that wasn’t as racy. One very interesting parallel in the National Review’s founder (who seems to have a fan in the senior editor) is the stalwart conservative idealism with any means justifying the end results. Sometimes that can be considered noble, however when the cause you are pushing is white Christian men, the nobility more resembles conquering and oppressing.

But this is the internet! If the developers wanted authority and archived their files, they get stuck into the Wayback Machine. Here is the some of the article that was scrubbed…

To “teabag” or not to “teabag”: That is not the most pressing question of these times, but it is a question to consider. Routinely, conservative protesters in the “tea party” movement are called “teabaggers,” and those calling them that do not mean it in a nice way. Many conservatives are mulling what to do about this term: fight it, embrace it, what?

After the multitude of protesters started to embrace the term “teabagger,” media had a field day with it.

“For most Americans, Wednesday, April 15, will be Tax Day, but . . . it’s going to be Teabagging Day for the right wing, and they’re going nuts for it. Thousands of them whipped out the festivities early this past weekend, and while the parties are officially toothless, the teabaggers are full-throated about their goals. They want to give President Obama a strong tongue-lashing and lick government spending.”

Jay realized his audience is a little older demographically and therefore weren’t in on the joke.

Ma and Pa America may not have been in on the joke, but plenty of other people were. On HBO, the lefty comedian Bill Maher commented, “When the year started, ‘teabagging’ was a phrase that referred to dangling one’s testicles in someone else’s face.” And the tea-party protesters “managed to turn it into something gross and ridiculous.” Tuh-dum.

After Cooper and the others smirked about “teabagging,” the word went utterly mainstream — although you could say that, if Cooper used it, it started mainstream: because how much more mainstream can you get than a CNN anchor? On ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos, E. J. Dionne, the liberal columnist, spoke of “a right-wing candidate supported by the teabaggers.” The host himself, Stephanopoulos, followed suit. On PBS’s NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, senior correspondent Gwen Ifill used “teabaggers” as well. At the New York Times, Paul Krugman used it in a column. Elsewhere, Roger Ebert used it in a movie review. And so on.

Hmmmm. Do you mean like I tend to hear the word “liberal” when coming from the angry and uninformed?

Some on the right are using “teabagger,” but mainly the word is a putdown from the left. Conservatives realize that nothing friendly is meant by it. You can tell by tone and context, for one thing. (Or is that two things?) Of course, some people use “teabagger” in innocence — unaware of any vulgar connotation. One such person is, or was, Gwen Ifill. Some of her NewsHour viewers wrote to complain. And Ifill later said, “Turns out I am the only person with access to email who never knew this was a term with a sexual meaning. I used it in an offhand manner as a shorthand referring to the ‘tea party’ movement. It was a slip I was unaware of, and I regret it.”

I liked this part. He starts to embrace the comical term.

Some conservatives are happy to embrace “teabagger,” or are at least willing to do so. They are “owning the insult,” which is to say, taking what is intended as a slur and wearing it proudly. There are many words and names in our vocabulary that started out as slurs and became something else. Several of these words and names are found in religion — “Christian,” for example. According to a Bible dictionary, this was “the name given by the Greeks or Romans, probably in reproach, to the followers of Jesus.” Soon enough, it “was universally accepted.” “Jesuit” had a defamatory beginning. Same with “Methodist,” “Unitarian,” “Quaker,” and “Shaker.” (You can sort of tell with those last two, can’t you?)

The article took an interesting turn when he started comparing the n-bomb to teabagger:

What about a special case — the worst word in American English, as some of us see it, namely the N-word? When I was growing up, in Ann Arbor, Mich., there was a little debate: Should school officials try to prevent black students from using the N-word? I don’t believe the issue was ever settled. And this brings up the question of whether “teabagger” could be kind of a conservative N-word: to be used in the family, but radioactive outside the family.

The article concludes with exasperation over the fight to get rid of the word teabagger:

In any event, it may well be too late to purge “teabagger” from our discourse, certainly from discourse controlled by liberals. But I’m for giving it a try: for running “teabagger” out of town, even at this late date. It is really a lowdown term. “Tea partier” is a neutral term. “Tea-party patriots” is a positive term, used by some of the protesters themselves. “Teabagger” — not so positive, and not so neutral.

It could well be that liberals at large are recognizing this too. In a discussion at Slate, the online magazine, Sam Tanenhaus wrote, “Even today the right insists it is driven by ideas, even if the leading thinkers are now Limbaugh and Beck, and the shock troops are tea-baggers and anti-tax demonstrators.” As he told me, he subsequently learned that “teabagger” had this vulgar meaning, and was used as a pejorative. So he changed his text to “tea-partiers”: “tea-partiers and anti-tax demonstrators.” Much better, don’t you think?

The latest CNN/ORC poll reveals that President Obama’s approval rating has gone up by two points from 51% in April to 53% today, while his disapproval rating has fallen by two points from 47% to 45%. While 85% of those polled agree that the IRS targeted of political groups is very or somewhat important issue, by a margin of 61%-37% (37% is the number of self-identified conservatives/Republicans in the country) respondents believed that President Obama’s statements on the matter have been completely mostly true. By a margin of 54%-42% respondents think Republicans are reacting appropriately to the matter, but the vast majority (55%-37%) believe that the IRS acted alone without White House orders.

A majority of those polled were dissatisfied with the way the Obama administration handled Benghazi (53%), but they believe that the administration was passing along the facts as they knew them to be at that time (50%-44%).

This supports the notion that the American public is catching on to and ignoring these shamelessly generated scandals–and maybe even supporting President Obama more because of them. While members of the GOP don’t seem to realize it, they are making themselves look like playground bullies in the eyes of the American people as lie after lie is quickly debunked by nearly every media outlet that isn’t FoxNEWS or InfoWARS.

The truth of the matter is that the American people have their attention focused on recovering financially after President Bush and the Republican Party nearly decimated the American middle class during their eight year “reign of terror,” otherwise known as the Bush Administration.

President Obama remains one of the most popular and trusted political figures in the United States, and no flimsy “scandal” is going to change that. By continuing to try to paint him as a dishonest political opportunist, the Republican Party is quickly losing credibility and alienating reasonable Americans.

To say that these manufactured scandals appear to be backfiring is an understatement. Not only are these attacks completely missing their target, they are making President Obama and the Democratic Party look like the only adults in the room as they continue to babysit Congressional Republicans during ridiculous congressional hearings based on frivolous charges.

Once again, the Republican Party has shot themselves in the foot by trying to bring down President Obama and his administration with easily debunked lies. The American public isn’t as dumb as they seem to think, and their fact-impervious base is shrinking by the second.
