“When will this insanity stop? When will enough people say, ‘Stop this madness!’ Too many have died. We should say to ourselves, ‘Not one more!'” Thus ends a powerful statement by Richard Martinez, prepared for his family after his son was announced as the second victim of the shooting that killed multiple students at UCSB.
Martinez referred to the politicians and the NRA as “craven” and “irresponsible” during his statement, and became more angry and animated the statement went on. “Our son Chris Martinez and six others are dead,” Martinez began. “Our family has a message for every parent out there: You don’t think it will happen to your child until it does.”
Martinez’ statement said in part:
[box type=”shadow”] Chris was a really great kid. Ask anyone who knew him. His death has left our family lost and broken.
Why did Chris die? Chris died because of craven, irresponsible politicians and the NRA. They talk about gun rights. What about Chris’s right to live?
When will this insanity stop? When will enough people say, “Stop this madness!” Too many have died. We should say to ourselves, “Not one more!”[/box]
Sadly, he might as well be speaking out against a natural disaster. In fact, he is speaking out against a natural disaster. Shootings and gun violence in NRA America is just like hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods, with one exception: hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods don’t have an army of lobbyists that strip down all legislation designed to protect people against them.
