Australian-born country music singer Kieth Urban (not to be confused with Karl Urban) hasn’t been doing so well lately, and reports from his latest concert at the XFinity Center in Massachussetts aren’t helping any.
The incident began on the “lawn” of the Xfinity center, a kind of open-air mosh pit where concert-goers party freely. A little too freely, it seems. The crowd was drunk on a scale of Biblical proportions; so much so that emergency medical workers working under a “Phase 1” plan had to be called in with ambulances from five surrounding counties to treat at least 46 people for alcohol-related problems. About 20 were taken to the hospital, though reports seem to indicate that most were simply too drunk to function.
Amid the drunken melee, possibly to the tune of the Idol judge’s “But for the Grace of God,” were two people having sex publicly in the middle of the lawn. Most concert goers cheered the Bacchanalian display, taking pictures and video with their phones. But according to the 17-year-old female involved, all was not what it appeared.
While she gave no visible signs of struggle, or resistance, or the male — 18-year-old Sean Murphy — any sign of forcible violence in the midst of the crowd of at least 15 people, the girl later claimed that she was raped. The phones, video and camera footage are with police now, who are examining it.
Police say that the alleged rape ended when a woman in the crowd pushed Murphy off the girl, whereupon he fled. Another witness report has it that the woman from the crowd asked the girl “Do you want this?” At which point, the girl, still undressed, is said to have “broken free and run away.” The police were called, and Murphy was arrested shortly after.
Murphy told the court that the act was completely consensual, and that he himself was highly intoxicated on Jack Daniels. He has been released on a $10,000 bond. His lawyer said:
“Put simply, this was a consensual act, not a sexual assault,” his lawyer said in a statement to CNN on Wednesday. “There are no allegations of force or violence against him. This was a private act that regrettably occurred in a public place. Mr. Murphy deeply regrets this incident and I am sure the young woman does as well. The young woman was neither intoxicated nor overcome by drugs at the time. Mr. Murphy has no criminal history whatsoever.”
The facts are still out, and the footage is under review. But there remain effectively three possibilities here:
- Murphy, with no history of violence or criminal behavior, got drunk and randomly decided to go Viking on a helpless maiden in the middle of a huge crowd, which apparently saw no signs of forcible intercourse or violence, or heard any cries for help. And afterward, Viking Murphy stayed at the concert long enough for police to find and arrest him, knowing that there were at least 15 witnesses filming his crime.
- Said helpless maiden had a drunken YOLO moment, and then thought better of it when she realized she was being filmed.
- Both of them were drunk teenagers who made bad decisions, amid at least 46 other bad decisions at the same drunken event.
Occam’s razor…you decide. We’ll wait for the footage.
