As numerous immigrants stream into the US over the Mexican border to escape violence in their home countries, one town in Texas has shown some truly astounding compassion and banned immigrant children from entering the city.
While Congress still refuses to pass any sort of immigration reform and the government struggles to deal with the recent influx of people coming over the border, League City, TX has basically refused to help with the problem. In a 6-2 vote on Tuesday, the city council passed a resolution refusing to assist the federal government process or detain undocumented immigrants.
Several residents spoke during the deliberations. Among them was Pastor John McMahon, who seemed to show some compassion for the people the city was shutting out.
“The bottom line here is what are we gonna do about the children that are here now. We’re shutting our doors to children before they have even had a chance.”
Some where much less reasonable, including one woman, Carol Alexander, who just babbled about the constitution.
“We have a constitution and by golly we need to stand up for our constitution. I’m sick and tired of us rolling over and playing dead. Stand up.”
One of the council members that voted against the resolution voiced her embarrassment at the decision. Currently the government has made no actual request of League City regarding housing immigrants and so the entire show was mostly just bigoted fluff. It’s unfortunate when people can’t take a moment to consider the horrible situation some of these refugees are trying to escape before barring their doors to them.
