It may come as no surprise but Rush Limbaugh this week decided to attack single mothers and other WIC recipients. Limbaugh’s position, as ignorant as usual, is that the program doesn’t help anybody and is only an excuse for single mothers to have lots of babies. If Rush wasn’t so regularly being this stupid it might actually be shocking, but unfortunately his views have been echoed by others on the extreme far right, like here and here. So once again we’re forced to combat their idiocy with facts.
First, WIC supports millions of pregnant women and families with small children up to the age of 5, with most of the roles being comprised of children. So the idea that it doesn’t help anyone is patently false. Second, unlike SNAP, the WIC program has very strict guidelines as to what can be purchased with the vouchers. The only options are foods deemed necessary to supplement the nutritional needs of needy families. They aren’t spending the money on non-essential foods or cigarettes or anything like that, so the misguided suggestion that it is a waste is also false.
Finally, as part of Limbaugh’s tirade he talks about, in relation to the government shutdown, how the single mothers wouldn’t know what to do if the program went away and that the country doesn’t need the program. These last statements are so oblivious and insensible as to require their own dissection. In regards to the country not needing WIC, how completely uninformed and detached is this man? He obviously knows absolutely nothing about the struggles that people go through in this country. Maybe he should be forced to spend time only allowed to eat as much as the needy are allowed to, like the CEO of Panera did, and see how well he does. As for the families on the program not knowing what to do if it went away, doesn’t that prove the opposite of what he’s saying? These people need this help, and would be lost without it, but that means they don’t need it? It hurts my brain to try and follow his logic on this one. I guess it all comes down to the ignorant Teapublican rationale that if someone needs help, then they don’t deserve it.
If you can, try to get through the clip without alternately laughing or crying about Rush Limbaugh’s stupidity.
