If you have ever wondered what pure evil looks like, look no further than Visnich Oral Surgery in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. The good doctor terminated a full-time employee of 12 years after a cancer diagnosis — with a particularly uncaring letter.
Last month, Hopewell Township resident Carol Jumper was diagnosed with cancer affecting her ovaries, liver, and pancreas — which prompted her employer to lay her off with a vicious letter that explains, “You are currently engaged in a battle against cancer that will be demanding physically, mentally, and emotionally.”
“She just couldn’t sleep at night, she would get out of bed and sit in a chair in the living room, that’s the only way she could sleep was sitting up” said Jumper’s fiance, Dennis Smerigan. “It went on for 2 or 3 weeks, you don’t really think anything of it at first. I was cleaning out the bed of my truck one day and she came out, she said you got to take me to the emergency room.”
“It was about a week later she gets this registered letter delivered at the house,” said Smerigan. “I was pissed when I read that letter. No kind of man sends a letter like that.”
Citing the “distracting” symptoms, effects of chemotherapy, and pain medications Jumper will need, Dr. George Visnich Jr. laid off his employee as of August 11, forcing the woman to battle cancer without a paycheck. The letter ended with Visnich thanking her for her time, and wishing her a “swift, smooth, and successful” fight — one that is undoubtedly now much harder for Jumper now that she does not have a job.
“She had been working full-time for this man for over 12 years,” said Smerigan of Jumper’s former employer. “He didn’t even call her, he hasn’t even called her once since she got sick.”
A Facebook group called Bumper’s Buddies is conducting fundraising efforts to help Carol through this demanding and difficult situation. Group members are hosting spaghetti dinners, selling t-shirts, and exploring other forms of fundraising for Jumper.
