There’s a lot wrong with our foreign policy. Without exception, very few countries practice Realpolitik — and fail at it — like the United States does (the exceptions being France and Great Britain; we had to learn from somewhere). While we can couch our missions in the flower language of humanitarianism, there will always been those cynical enough to see right through it. And, as recent interventions have proven, the cynics are often right.
Our foreign policy is also complicated; so complicated, in fact, that we need a chart to understand it. Thankfully, political cartoonist Andy Singer has one for us. And as complicated as this is, I can offer you a single cheat: go to the squares that address “oil.” It’ll become pretty clear then.
