How do you know that you are too much of a right wing gun nut? Maybe it should give you a clue when Glenn Beck says that you have gone way too far.
A man identified as Shawn Nixon was recently approached by police in Madison Heights, Michigan as he loitered on the street near a high school carrying a rifle. Rather than answer the reasonable questions posed by the police, Nixon became immediately uncooperative and confrontational.
The school was placed on lock-down and called police after observing the armed man standing across the street — a reasonable action considering the tragedies at Sandy Hook and other schools in recent years. Nixon seemed unable to grasp the rationale for the police taking an interest in him however.
“How long are you going to be out here today?” The first officer to arrive asked.
“The funny thing about you asking me a question is I’m not going to answer it,” Nixon said defiantly. “Anything I say can and will be used against me in a court of law, right?”
The officer explained to him that would be true if he was being arrested but that it didn’t apply in this case.
This was too much for even Beck who is well-known for his pro NRA stance on gun control.
“Can we stop doing open carry parades just to antagonize the police?” He asked on his radio show.
“If you’re at the school,” Beck said, “I’m calling the police.”
“Common sense says that somebody’s going to have a problem with a guy with a rifle across the street from a school,” Beck said.
Nixon belongs to an open carry group that calls themselves Hells Saints based in Michigan. On their Facebook page they describe themselves as “Earnest and friendly like Jehovah’s Witnesses, but heavily armed.”
