Hello, sports fans! If you’ve been following the controversy surrounding former Ravens running back Ray Rice, you know that it took the full video of his assault on his now-wife to finally get the NFL to do something about him. While players who are caught doing something as harmless as smoking pot face harsh punishments, the NFL is oddly lax in dealing with domestic violence.
Initially, Rice received a paltry two-game suspension, which was later increased to six weeks. However, once the full video made its way to the public, the Ravens cut him. Former Current TV and MSNBC political pundit Keith Olbermann razed the NFL as an “enabler of men who beat women,” highlighting what appears to have been a coverup of the incident that was blown wide-open.
Unfortunately, not everyone feels that Rice was in the wrong.
Jeff Thurn of ESPN 99.1 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota was floored when one caller defended Rice at the end of his show. “Brad” waited on hold to share his views on Ray Rice, and domestic violence in general.
“Hey, just a couple points,” Brad said, “What did she do to him, and he only punched her once. To me, it’s getting blown way out of proportion.”
“Holy crap, wait a second,” Thurn responded, “You just said ‘He only punched her once.’ That in itself, you deserve to sit in prison for five years.” He added, “I don’t care if a woman comes up to you with a sledgehammer — You don’t hit her back.”
“Well, I dunno,” Brad replied.”
“You dunno?” Thurn shot back. “You’re telling me there’s reasons why people should justifiably hit a woman if they hit them first?”
Brad shared his very good, very important reasoning for hitting a woman: “backtalk.”
“Well, I think if she backtalks ya,” Brad said.
Very clearly disappointed in humanity, Thurn told Brad, “Bro, I hope that you don’t have kids man, cause I feel sorry for them.” After cutting Brad off, Thurn continued, “Unbelievable! That’s what’s wrong with society. There are people out there with half a brain like Brad. Half a brain! How these people have jobs, how they hold down an income, how they last in society — God forbid we find out if that guy has kids. I’d send Social Services immediately and yank them away. Sorry you live your life that way, Brad. That’s not how society works, bro. Unbelievable!”
