Police arrested Erika Murray, 31, a Blackstone, Massachusetts resident, on Thursday after police called by a concerned neighbor found the bodies of 3 dead infants in her home. Police also discovered 4 other children in the home ranging in age from 6 months to 13-years-old with the two younger children covered in feces and hidden away, even from their father who also lived in the home unaware of their existence.
The neighbor told reporters that when she went into Murray’s house, she found a 6-month-old infant on a bed covered in feces, and had to walk over soiled diapers to get to him.
In another room, she said that she found the 3-year-old child in a similar condition.
“He was sitting on a mattress, completely sunk in with feces, completely covered, his hair, his clothes, everything, was rocking back and forth.”
The neighbor said that when the police brought Murray out of the house she asked her what she thought she was doing and she “just kinda laughed it off.”
The four living children were removed from Murray’s custody and made wards of the state.
Ray Rivera, Murray’s longtime boyfriend who shared the house with her and is presumably the father of the children seemed unaware of the two younger children and told police he has no knowledge of the three dead infants.
Murray had apparently successfully kept the pregnancies a secret from the man who shared her bed every night, as well as keeping any knowledge of the births from him and hiding the children from him in an 1,150 sq. ft. home.
Keith Halpern, Murray’s attorney told CNN that his client has mental health issues and that she was “a prisoner of her own fear” and that her actions were born of that fear.
“She was terrified of the pregnancies being discovered,” he said.
“She was terrified of the two younger children being discovered. Why? I don’t know the answer to that.”
Asked about Rivera’s claim that he knew nothing of the younger children Halpern said:
“It is a mystery to me how Mr. Rivera could have failed to notice (the) numerous pregnancies (of) the woman with whom he shared a bed. It’s a mystery to me how he could have failed to realize that there were two children living under the same roof as him, and he didn’t know about it.”
WCVB reports on Murray’s arrest.
