While the Supreme Court has repeatedly been proven wrong in their assertion that racism is a thing of the past when they struck down key parts of the Voting Rights Act last summer, there is occasionally evidence that race based hatred is on the decline. One such incident took place in Troy, North Carolina on Saturday.
A Ku Klux Klan group assembled in front of the Montgomery County courthouse to rant against illegal immigration. Instead, WGHP8 reports, the hate group spent the entire hour allotted by their permit in a shouting match with counter-protesters, who had assembled on the opposite side of the street.
Troy police maintained order deploying between the two sides and keeping them separated as the KKK group, The Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan hurled hateful shouts of “mixed breed” and “white power” at the counter-protesters. Apparently unable to see the irony in it, they also called for the counter-protesters to “get a job” and “stop living off the rest.”
Scout Rosen, who drove to Troy from Charlotte to join in the counter-protest told reporters:
“This is my home state and I think a lot of us are pretty disturbed with the idea of them thinking that this is the kind of place they can have those kinds of rallies.”
Residents of Troy said that they were just embarrassed that the group thought that their town was an appropriate place to hold such a rally supporting hatred and intolerance.
A spokesman for the group from Caswell county said that they had chosen Troy because they had received complaints from Troy concerning the number of “illegal immigrants” although there is no indication that there is a large population of undocumented immigrants in the state.
Janice Baldwin told reporters,
“That it’s enough of it going around in the world, but to hit directly where you live, and then to stand and witness it, it’s something entirely different.”
Devante Gainy added,
“I knew this town had had this racialist thing, but I didn’t think that they would allow this to be happening.”
