The TEApublicans in Congress have taken the country hostage yet again, this time by refusing to negotiate a budget deal before the dreaded sequester goes into effect on March 1st. The way GOP darlings, like Paul Ryan tell it, you’d think the sequester was all the idea of President Obama and Democrats. Not so, as clearly demonstrated in this quote by Ryan himself:
What conservatives like me have been fighting for, for years, are statutory caps on spending, legal caps in law that says government agencies cannot spend over a set amount of money. And if they breach that amount across the board, sequester comes in to cut that spending, and you can’t turn that off without a supermajority vote. We got that in law. That is here.
So, what exactly is on the table as far as budget cuts go?
• 70,000 children would be taken out of the Head Start program
• $902 million in small business loan cuts
• FEMA grants, which provide disaster relief, would be reduced
• 600,000 pregnant women, infants and children would be taken off of food assistance programs
Author and fellow liberal, David Cay Johnston, gloriously calls TEApublicans out on their blatant hypocrisy concerning the party’s supposed “pro-life” stance.
Let’s focus on one piece of this. 600,000 pregnant women and mothers of small children will be cut from the women and infants nutrition program. Republicans are always telling us about their reverence for life. Really, they’re going to have 600,000 poor women and children not have proper food? There is a lifetime effect on development, especially mental development, if you don’t have proper nutrition in the womb and when you’re an infant. But they are determined to cut those children, who are helpless, out of good nutrition.
Oh, right. These are TEApublicans! They only care about the child until it’s actually born, because COGNITIVE DISSONANCE.
