Drew Carey has stepped up to help identify the evil high school kids who dumped a bucket of urine and feces on an autistic teen, and told him it was for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The teen did not know that anything but water was to be dumped on his head until after the contents of the bucket were poured on his head from the roof of a garage.
The teens recorded the humiliating and disgusting act — and proudly posted it on Instagram.
Police in Bay Village, Ohio are searching for the perpetrators — And Carey, host of The Price is Right, has offered to pony up a $10,000 reward to find the teens responsible, if police want to start a reward fund.
Bay Village Police Chief Mark Spaetzel said that charges would be brought as soon as the teens are identified. The Bay Village School district has also indicated that the students involved are in for some punishment if they are identified.
One of Carey’s Twitter followers suggested that he donate the money to Autism Speaks, an autism advocacy organization that pushes dangerous and disproven claims that autism is linked to vaccinations — and, unfortunately, Carey agreed.
AutisticAdvocacy.org noted in a January open letter to supporters of Autism Speaks that,
The anti-vaccine sentiments of Autism Speaks’ founders have been well documented in the mainstream media. Several of Autism Speaks’ senior leaders have resigned or been fired after founders Bob and Suzanne Wright overruled Autism Speaks’ scientific leadership in order to advance the discredited idea that autism is the result of vaccinations.
While the organization has backed off of vaccine denialism slightly in recent years, only 4% of the organization’s budget actually went to helping families struggling with autism in 2010. It is also one of the few major disability advocacy groups that refuses to place a victim of the disability on the board of directors, and its rates of executive pay are the highest among autism organizations.
We urge Carey to reconsider his pledge to donate to Autism Speaks if police locate the teens, and choose an autism support organization that does more to help victims. Autistic Advocacy suggests the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network, Autism Network International, or Autism Society of America.
All in all, though, Carey should be congratulated for his willingness to jump in and help bring those who are willing to torture a special needs child “just for fun” to justice.
