Why did 60-year-old Douglas Leguin lay siege to an entire gated community in North Dallas, Texas with propane cylinders and his trusty AK-47, and christen it “Doug-e-stan” besides the fact that he has totally lost his sanity?
Leguin told Ken Kalthoff from NBC 5, Dallas-Fort Worth that the whole thing — setting a home ablaze with an eight-year-old child and her sitter inside of it, shooting at firefighters and riddling their vehicles with bullets (thankfully, none were injured), and even firing upon the SWAT team that finally subdued him — was just a publicity stunt to get out the vote.
Leguin explained from behind the glass during his prison visitation with Kalthoff:
“This is a get out the vote campaign. You have to do something big to get attention in this country.”
Here at AATTP, we strongly agree with Leguin about getting out the vote: That’s America’s only hope for wresting power from a cruel, bigoted, and destructive GOP that wreaks rack and ruin upon their own constituents to serve their wealthy masters. We also understand how hard it is to ‘get attention in this country.’ After all, page views pay the bills around here.
Alas, Leguin totally lost us at torching a dumpster to set a home on fire, and blasting people with an AK-47 part.
Raw Story further reports Leguin has been charged with seven counts of aggravated assault against a public servant. Police arrested the sovereign citizen of “Doug-e-stan” and put him in jail, but can go if he can come up with the $350,000 bail. Um, wait… they actually might let this maniac out?!?
But Leguin didn’t mean to hurt anyone, he just wanted to “wake up America, man.” Which — for the babysitter and eight-year-old child trapped in the burning home — adds a whole to meaning to the phrase, “wake and bake.”
“I know what I did was crazy, but I’m going to pay for that. I just got to do something to wake up America, man. I got to do some thing to get people out there voting. We got the perfect tool to change the government. We can completely overhaul the government. But everybody has to vote.”
Unfortunately, the “tool” this ammosexual “sovereign Citizen” refers to is the Second Amendment and his huge
Yet, strikingly, parts of Leguin’s rant almost have a populist ring to them, with echoes from the Occupy movement .
“The next four elections are going to be crucial to this country. And if you don’t want to wake up one day and look at America and it looks exactly like Bangladesh and New Delhi, you’re going to have to change this government.”
Then Leguin ruins it by dishing on his amazing, magical, government-changing
penis tool from our forefathers again, before making a salient point about income inequality.
“If that doesn’t happen, it’s going to be Bangladesh and New Delhi when everybody looks around. There’s going to be a bunch of really rich people, and the rest of the people are going to be really poor, living in boxes.”
Unfortunately, guns don’t create peace, prosperity, or a responsive, democratic government. Guns only create distraction, fear, and dead (or maimed) bodies. That’s probably why Republicans like them so much.
The Texas “affluenza” judge’s overly-lenient decision in the Ethan Crouch case particularly stuck in Leguin’s craw. The 15-year-old from a wealthy family killed four pedestrians and injured two in a drunk driving spree, showed no remorse, and got sentenced to a pricey rehab facility. Yet the same judge sentenced a 14-year-old black boy to 10 years in jail for a far lesser crime — he punched a man in self-defense and the man hit his head on the pavement and died.
But we can’t tell whether Leguin’s anger comes from a deep sense of racial injustice, or whether he’s just upset that Crouch didn’t get punished harshly enough.
Ironically, Leguin’s “get-out-the-vote” publicity stunt is likely to cost him his own right to vote, if a jury convicts him. That’s what happens to convicted felons.
“I had a hard time choosing this path, because I had a lot to lose. Somebody had to do it.”
When asked about his wife, Leguin nearly burst into tears. While Leguin went on his crazed rampage, his wife had called to police to report him missing.
