A California physical education teacher is facing a charge of corporal injury to a child after he was caught on video dragging a 14-year-old student into a pool during gym class. Danny Peterson, a 10-year veteran of the Stockton Unified School District, can be seen on a 95 second video dragging the Edison High School student toward the pool in an incident that occurred in August.
The girl reportedly did not wish to enter the pool that day because she had just gotten her hair done in preparation for an event she was attending that night.
In the video, the girl can be seen actively resisting and screaming for help as the teacher drags her across the concrete and other students attempt to assist her. At one point, she yells that her bathing suit top was coming off, but her cries were ignored as the teacher worked to wrestle her away from those attempting to aid her.
“Regardless of her participation (in the class) it should disgust you how this man put his hands on a 14-year-old girl. She said multiple times, ‘my top is falling down,'” Gilbert Somera, the attorney representing the victim and her family, said. “No means no and stop means stop. This isn’t a situation where she’s attacking a teacher and he’s defending himself. When a woman or a 14-year-old girl says no, it means no,” Somera said.
Peterson has been placed on paid
vacation leave pending an investigation into the incident, as the school district noted in a statement: “SUSD has taken appropriate action in this case. The teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave per district policy.”
Initially, the teacher was taken off of leave and assigned to another campus, until KXTV-TV notified the district that he was facing criminal charges. He was then placed on leave again.
